probably because when it comes to stairs, safety SHOULD be more important than beauty. A beautiful stair, in order to truly be beautiful, MUST also be a safe stair.

I always wear a helmet and elbow- and knee-pads when navigating stairs, and I'm even skilled at rappelling. I get a little anxiety when I forget my rope and I have to go upstairs to get it, but so far, so good.

I think it works so nicely because the black isn't really a jet black, it is a very dark gray so the contrast isn't jarring at all and it is just really beautiful.

we did something sort of similar -- light gray walls, white trim, painted the risers black and put down black and gray flor stair runner
