Inspiration: Combining Vintage and Modern

8-12-08 JJLocations 2.jpgCombining vintage and modern isn’t always easy, especially when the vintage dates all the way back to 1722. See how 18th century floorboards and lime plastering successfully mesh with mid-century design classics in a drool-worthy interior below.

8-12-08 JJLocations 1.jpgThe five floors glow with magnificent natural light, perfect – we imagine – for the Huguenot silk weaver who dwelled within. Mostly, however, we’re stunned that the beadboard, cornices and flagstone hold their own so well against such unabashedly modern furnishings.

8-12-08 JJLocations 3.jpgPart of this home’s success might be the muted color palettes and the fact that period details are embraced and even called out, but certainly never overlooked. Without a doubt, this is one East London dwelling that leaves us feeling joyous, not jarred.

I LOVE seeing such old homes functioning so well today. I'd like to investigate the attic, basement and any other structural details.

This is a classic European look -- a frankly old, historic shell with chic modern furniture. MCM looks even better when there's a contrast with the architecture; in a plain white box, it looks, well, plain.

I love the green dining chairs- any idea where they're from?

Nikita33, looks like the Eames Aluminum Side Chair. They have them at HiveModern for about $880 each.

Ajavonfleurberg, the dining table reminds me of the Big Sur from Crate and Barrel, albeit in a darker stain. Not sure if the home's owners will ever see this, so maybe someone else can help!

Nicely done! I adore old houses. And I'm never going to find one in Houston, where they tear everything down after 10 yrs );

I like how the clean lines of the furniture let the details of the molding speak.

Ha! what a surprise...
This is the house of a friend of mine in London, who restored it over many years (it was a wreck before...).
I've played on that harpsichord :)

most perfect place I've ever seen on AT. I keep coming back to it.

Does anyone know what the sofa in the living room is? How old, where is it from, etc.?
