Inspiration: Good Design on Mundane TV

11-26mundanetv.jpgClick, click, stop, click, stop, click, click, click ... Don't mind us, we're just channel surfing. Cold fall nights mean staying in more, and yes, watching more television than we really should. But even while flipping through, and sometimes grazing on, mindless TV shows and commercials, we've got home design on the brain and have been noting good decor on bad (or otherwise, unremarkable) TV.

Recognize any of the images above? If you're avid channel surfers like we are, you probably recognize the following: (from top left, moving clockwise) Cool Flokati rug in a Dyson commercial; hey Henry, love those striking drapes behind you at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee meeting; two geeky-cool spaces in a Dell commercial; those Gardasil girls got good (albeit, Urban Outfitters-y) design sense; and finally, forget Paris and her potential BFFs -- check out that eye-catching flocked turquoise and gold wallpaper!

There was another commercial that had some notable decor that we really liked, but we can't remember what the product was for, since we were paying so much attention to the decor, rather than the product! The commercial had a cool display of plates on the wall as decor in the dining room. Striking a chord with anyone?

Does anyone know who makes that couch in the picture in the lower right hand corner?!

I think it's the Naked sofa by Moooi. You pick the upholstery covers and can change them out. They're not cheap but they are gorgeous.

Propeller in Hayes Valley recently started carrying the line and has a bunch of the upholstery examples to see in person.

I'm annoyed by the sets that I see on the Sunday morning news shows. Everything looks plastic and jazzed up. I'm talking about Fox News Sunday, etc. Charlie Rose, on the other hand, has a nice table and courtroom chairs.

Also, I wish that our Presidents would find themselves a decent lectern. The lectern that one frequently sees looks like it was designed by NASA.

I just saw the commercial for Guardasil with the girl sitting on the cool black and white couch, I want it! (The couch, not the vaccine)

i really liked some of the designs they did in that tori spelling reality show. the childrens room (wallpaper so pretty) and the master bedroom were so beautiful. I have never been a fan of wallpaper but thought most of the wallpaper in her home were gorgeous (except the dining room. barf)

I agree with Ebanfield. CNN has some good Eames Aluminum chairs on some of their sets.

If you're watching House you'll see almost every classic icon imaginable: Eames, Emeco, Noguchi, Breuer

I think the weirdest thing i ever saw was Lance Bass and Britney Spears gossiping in a pair of SUPER rare Jacobsen Swan chairs with wooden legs. So random!
