Inspiration: Hats as Decor

7.23.09 hats 2.JPGSo what do you do when you have a love of hats, but never find yourself wearing them? Well, display them, of course! We had a rush of inspiration (and a glass of wine or two) one night with our roommate, and hung a number of fairly random objects in empty frames on the wall. The protractor didn't, ultimately, make the cut, but the feathered hat became a household favorite! We love the idea of incorporating beautiful headgear into our homes...

7.23.09 hats 1.jpgLiving Etc. featured these bowler hats retrofitted as lamps in a piece about circus inspired decor. We loved many of the ideas in the piece, but also think that this idea would easily transcend a circus theme. We would love to have a bowler hat lamp above our reading chair! (We just envisioned an entire series of photographs of our friends in a very Magritte-like setting...)

Hats as objects of decoration isn't a new idea--Elizabeth posted before about their appeal as a sculptural item. But we love these new (to us, at least) and intriguing ways to display hats in our home!

I've seen a picture on flickr where someone used fedoras as lamps like the bowler hats. It was pretty cool looking and not circus-y at all. I want to do that soon.

What a great idea! I'm moving to a smaller place, undoubtedly with less storage, and I was fretting a little about what to do with awkward, sensitive objet.

lol, this is such a timely post. I just got a real mariachi sombero and have a pretty awesome Toad (from Super Mario) hat. I need to figure out how to display them, especially the sombero, in a tasteful way without ruining it.

When I moved into my place, I strung a clothes line about the wall of closet doors that I had, and I used clothes pins to hang the hats up there. They really help to soften the edges of the closet doors, they're visual interesting, and all the hats are available and functional all the time.

The cover photo's hat with feathers looks like something Quentin Crisp would wear!

I just want to share my theme idea: get cowboys hats and create a brokeback themed room.

But seriously, I know a hat/cap collector that has displays his collection in neat shelves in the living room of his pad. It's space consuming but his shelves are well lit and they make for an interesting conversation about his travels.

This is off topic but does anyone know where I can score a similar vase?

This is such a great idea! I just found out about your blog, but I'm so happy I did. I love hats, and I have so many around the house that I do not wear anymore, this is a great way to utilize them:)
