OK, so some of you seem to be over hanging plates, but this photo has so much else going for it we had to put it up. The tiles in the alcove, echoed in the facing wall, and the seeming incongruent parts that end up flowing together so nicely...

Like the green tiles on the back wall, or the seats in primary colors, or the one red knob on the drawers. We like this room for all these reasons, and because it exemplifies a point that cannot be reiterated enough in these financially unstable times: you don't need to go into debt decorating from a catalog. Mix it up, accumulate pieces over a long period of time, don't worry too much about getting things to match perfectly, because when you fill your house with things you love, a look will come together that no stylist could ever replicate.

I love their use of painted tiles and the hood which really tie in nicely with the rustic ceiling beams! Although I am not crazy about the glass tiles, it is refreshing to see so much color in a kitchen! I can't tell you how frustrating it is to design an amazing kitchen for my clients only to have them install granite counter tops and back splashes! Colorful glass knobs...excellent choice for pulling it all together...Bravo!

erm ... "flowing together nicely"? not for me, sorry. like both the alcove tiles, and the blue and green ones, but i think they clash resoundingly with the backsplash. if the owners love it that way, that is good, and joy to them, but i really cannot see that as a recommendable design combination :-D

Not how I would do it, but much to like about this room. Hodgepodge chic is very much my style.
Ok, so... what's wrong with granite?

Hey! Nice plates from Bordallo Pinheiro, in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. They may be in or out of style, but the company dates from 1884, still produces, and if the plates are old, are anything BUT budget!! The nicest pieces are similar, but much larger and are really very, very imaginative and detailed. Lots of plant and animal figures, and depth of color (hard to see online and in smaller pieces).
End of Portuguese culture lecture - hanging plates on the wall possibly got started here :)
