evamae, does have a point. actually i have a giant letter a that I've hand drawn and have hanging downstairs. For me, getting the giant thing framed is what I'm having a hard time with!

As soon as I saw the photo of this wall art I thought back to an early episode of Mary Tyler Moore where Rhoda redecorates Lou Grants apartment and includes a huge poster of the number 5. A poster or a original work of art?? Anyways I guess this was popular in the 70's.

this would be something fun to have in your house for a while. maybe not a permanent fixture, but definitely something i wouldn't mind having up for period of time.

i really like this. I've thought about doing it myself and still might. Although i would love just to have that one already framed for me.

for the DIY crowd, making it yourself wouldn't be to bad. If you hand make it that is... if you wanted to get it printed it would be pricey, large things always are. Our 42" wide plotter that we used to use at school cost $14 a foot to use (that's 12" x 42" not square foot), and that was cutting the costs for the students as much as possible. I've looked into kinkos for a few projects as well and they were like $7.?? per square foot. So it doesn't come cheap. But hand drawing one that big would be easy. find a friend that uses indesign or something like that, pick out your typeface, and your number, make it huge, and print it out on a laser printer in tile mode. then tile it all together, if you don't like the patchwork look. you could then use that as a guide to draw a giant one. Could use the soft pencil transfer method or something. Then you just gotta find something that big to put it on.

sugarblush - i know your pain, framing large costs so much. I just framed a 33 x 47 (after 2 years in a tube...) poster by a dutch graphic designer, and it was $180, no frills besides anti glare glass, and that was at 60% for a once a year sale.

re: jmorey... while not archival, painting this on masonite would be a good, non-curl bet (and available in 4X8 sheets)... doing it on 1/2 or 3/4in plywood (or MDF) would provide a self-hanging piece as well... an odd one, but ikea sells end-panels for their cabinets in veneered 3/4in stock (3ft wide X 88in high, methinks)... a nexus yellow-brown panel costs $125. i could see a rex-ray-esque thing going on a material like this...

redneckymodern - all good suggestions there. i'd do it in heartbeat but my wife and i have very different styles, and i just need a studio of my own to hang all my stuff...

I'd go to the art store and buy a huge canvas and black paint. Then rent/borrow a projector, find a number 5 in a font I liked and shoot it on the canvas from across the room to the appropriate size and paint away!

I like the "5" much more than "For like, ever" or "Keep calm carry on", plus since it's numbers, there's infinite options for each person.

I guess I don't get the whole number thing. What does it mean? If you had this in your house, what would you say to someone that asked you about its significance? I totally like it, but I don't get it.

i think the number thing is just the love for the shape and form of a number. the curves the angles, and the way it's form plays with the negative space around it.

i might just be a nutty typophile but i love numbers.

does it really have to mean something? what do a lot of paintings mean? do you like the way it looks or do you have to like "the meaning" of it. Is the meaning that the painter has for it the same as yours, and it does matter. I really don't think so.

lilyc- good call on the projector, i didn't even think of that, but that's because i don't have access to one easily.

I'd also like to see this on wood and black witht he natural wood showing through. A nice light wood, like pine or something.

I also have a number obssession. I came across these numbered mugs in a book and fervently search for them. Of course it has been suggested that this is a very simple DIY project, but that hasn't motivated me. Anybody know any retailers?
