Inspiration: Kanye's Glow in the Dark Tour

5-23-08 kanye.jpgWe recently saw Kanye West's Glow in the Dark Tour in Montreal, and we'll start by saying it was fantastic. It's basically a one-man performance piece, but if that conjures up images of a dude on a blank stage with a chair reciting some monologue, well, au contraire. The set design is fantastic, and left us feeling very inspired.

Not a great image, we know, but maybe it gives you the idea

Probably our favorite part was the Noguchi-like "shooting stars" that changed colors and had faces (we think) projected onto them, reminiscent of the work of video artist Tony Oursler. It got us thinking about how pretty a collection of circular paper lanterns in differing shapes can look in a room, and reminded us of this post from a few months ago. We also think it might be nice to try them outside (or inside, why not?) with blue bulbs when entertaining. Or maybe inside with a mix of warm-toned bulbs in pinks and yellows... lots of possibilities, and we've got Kanye to thank for 'em.

It's amazing that there is a stage large enough to hold both his ego and his hype. The only thing Kanye inspires in me is the urge to poke my ears out with chopsticks.

While I agree with the EGO part, he is as good as the hype. Truly. And I'm someone who was vehemently against him for many years. Until I actually listened.

Whatever, the ego is just part of his shtick. If you listen to his lyrics, he makes as much fun of himself and his ego, as anyone else does. I mean, obviously he has a massive ego, like any other superstar or wannabe-superstar, but the super exaggerated ego is the persona. Anyway, I like his beats and his design sense.

I guess this ego thing can apply to any celebrity. Why would a normal human being want to be famous if not because of sheer egocentricity???

Felt the same way until I saw the Monday night show in L.A. The amount of thought that went into every single aspect of the show was beyond impressive. From the moonscape set to the 2001 Space Odyssey on acid multimedia, Glow in The Dark was second to none. Kanye raises the bar on what a live concert should be, giving his audience their money worth and then some.

He is one of the few celebs with a massive ego who can actually back it up.

I was fortunate enough to Glow in The Dark Tour when it hit Austin. I'm getting chills just thinking about it. He puts on an amazing show. Fan or not, you must respect a man with that much drive and passion.
