Inspiration: Recycled Plastic Bag Garden of Light

Photographs by Gustavo Sanabria

In early March an art group in Madrid created an installation of 80 recycled plastic bags that were perched on stems, illuminated and inflated with the help of the wind. Typically regarded as trash and often seen cast away on the street, these bags took on a new life as flowers in a garden of light...

We imagine, since each bag inflated with the wind, that the "cloud" moved and swayed in a beautiful show of light. The colors of the plastic, as well as the images printed on the bags, cast soft hues with the small light sources inside. We love the idea of repurposing these looked-down-upon vessels into something beautiful and unique in our outdoor living space.

We wonder what the practicalities would be of integrating a row of large-bulbed holiday lights with some of the bags balled up under our sink. Even a cluster of five or six on some tall stands in the corner of the garden would be an interesting idea. There's bound to be a successful DIY here...any ideas how to apply this, realistically, to your own garden?4.8.9 bag garden 4.jpg

Interesting idea. Looks stunning at night, but I think during the day it would simply look like a bunch of plastic bags tied to sticks...

I agree, in the daytime it would look trashy.

This looks like something you would see in Spain, they are very creative with very little.

Love the whimsy of it...would look magical at night, especially when the wind catches the plastic bag "clouds"...
