Lake Union Floating Home by Vandeventer + Carlander Architects

Remember the coolest cabin of them all, the C3 Cabin? The same Seattle architects designed this Lake Union floating home.

Private spaces are downstairs, on the "float" level, while public spaces are on the second level.

The float level has storefront windows.

The kitchen features zebrawood cabinets and limestone countertops.

A translucent stair tower connects the two levels.

I love this house - I often dream of living on the water - so much character and great views around Lake Union.

And seriously - AT Seattle is so very needed!

It's beautiful, inside and out. But at the same time, it makes me a little bit sad thinking of this as a houseboat--very similar to driving through a neighborhood of old brick homes and then seeing a sleek, modern concrete box on stilts.

This was two blocks from my place on east lake and yale. Next door is a beautiful tuscan villa house boat as well. This is an awesome jogging path as well except during the summer when the tourist duck boats fill the narrow road with diesel. Every two years the condo association of floating homes offers walk-aboard tours. Hopefully they'll do it this year. Houseboats are for everyone as they don't always own the land under the boat so if the rents for the slip go up you may need to find a new home for your already expensive home vs. real property ownership.

    squidlette-

Unlike in Marin County (or probably elsewhere?) where houseboats are "funky," in Seattle, they are an eclectic mix of high end design. They are, essentially, just fancy-pants homes-they just happened to float. Growing up in Seattle, I always tried to pick out my favorite one while crossing the Montlake bridge and always dreamt of living in one...
