Modern Decor Details in a Traditional Home
Jeffers Design Group

jeffersdining012109.jpgLocal San Francisco designer Jay Jeffers took on the job of renovating a huge 1913 Presidio Heights home and injected plenty of modern decor details throughout some very traditional rooms. For instance, this dining room has very classic table...

...and dining chairs but the side chairs (flanking the fireplace) are upholstered in a very current print and the artwork above the fireplace is both oversized and slightly offbeat.

In addition to the traditional carpet and velvet-upholstered sofas, the sitting room features bright walls, colorful sconces and a modern painting in a vibrant shade of lime green.

The powder room includes an antique (or antique style) mirror and mirrored vanity, but the bold, all over large size patterned wallpaper is a very non-traditional choice, as is the more contemporary sink design.

A large, luxurious bath uses classic materials such as subway tile and marble surfaces but is made modern by the unusual mirror placement in front of the windows and the bright saturated blue hue used on the cabinetry.

lounge012109.jpgThe lounge has traditional touches such as wood panels on the walls and club chairs but the pattern on pattern design of the room feels current.

I love this "traditional through a modern filter" trend.

I think it's cute....my boyfriend said "I'd take it if someone gave it to me, but it needs a lot of work." :)

The blue/lavender washroom is a big no-no but that dinning room at the top is very nice. I would take that damn bird of of there and it would be perfect.

Can't wait until the bird/animal trend dissapears. In the words of the great Mayor Daley ... "silly I tell you, silly, just silly....really silly, so silly".

The wall treatments and the color palette just kill it for me. It looks overworked and cluttered. The soft pink and blue colors just look a bit too grandma.

Love the dining room and the large table that comfortably sits 8.

I'd get rid of that bird though. It would give me the feeling its watching me when ever I'm eating. I'd also remove that big bunch of flowers in the middle of the table. It makes looking at some one opposite you too difficult.

I don't think that's artwork over the fireplace. It looks like a mirror reflecting artwork on the opposite wall. It seems like a nice piece of art... would like to see the whole thing.

while i recognize & appreciate the creativity and expertise that are inherent in this work, i DESPISE this school of design. it looks forced and like a very expensive version of my thrift-store-scavenged apartment right after college--which i have since thankfully outgrown both in taste and financing.....

    mafan--

No doubt that flower arrangement is changed out for dinner parties.

I simply don't see any "modern decor details" inthis house. I'm a fan--and practioner--of mising antiques and modern pieces in older homes. But this just looks like a lot of tacky, overstuffed 'traditional' things.

Hmm, I meant "mixing" not missing. But that sounds interesting, too.

It's mostly a traditional look with a bit of modern edge thrown in. The rooms are gorgeous, and have a lot of unexpected elements that add interest.

wyzwomyn, sorry to get personal, but did yr right after college apt contain elements as sublime as the dining and powder room walls and accessories, or exalted color scheme?

I love parts of this and hate parts. Love the dining room and the chairs, hate the bird. I think the powder room and the bathroom are hideous. The wallpaper in the powder room is killing me, and not in a good way. I dig the lounge.

I like the idea of mixing eras and patterns, but when it goes wrong, it goes really wrong.

There are elements in most of the rooms (I don't like anything about the lounge, to be honest) that I really like.

I adore all of this except for the cold periwinkle blue in the tiled bathroom (although I love the room itself). I would have gone with ta warm color there. I covet the onyx sink in the powder room. Everything looks lived-in rather than too precious. I could live there.

Out of curiosity, how old are the posters who find this decor too "grandma" and too fussy, or "ugly"?
