Dwell and Inhabitat

8.12.09 reburbia 2.jpgDwell magazine and Inhabitat.com have joined forces to address the issue of suburbs and strip malls decaying in response to "the current housing crisis, the sub-prime mortgage meltdown, and rising energy costs." By calling architects, civil engineers, and imaginative creatives of all kinds to re-invent the suburbs.

The top twenty finalists from over 400 entries have been selected by their impressive panel of judges, and now they are calling on the people to vote for their favorite. A Reader's Choice Award will be bestowed on the voter's favorite, and the judges will make their final selection of winners on August 17th.

The concepts are multi-faceted, and range from Suburban Airships to Freeway Wind Turbines and are inspiring to say the least. Check out all of the entries! It is an encouraging look at the bleak future of suburbs everywhere.

Just checked out the website. This is a great competition. I feel that the best neighborhoods have commercial and residential all within reach of its inhabitants. It is the reason that I am not a fan of suburbia. If you have access to great mom-and-pop shops, restaurants, and a host of services within a few minutes walk, you save money in the long run. You're more likely to be apart of a community and less likely to be sitting in traffic hell. Hopefully, it starts catching on amongst lawmakers. Let return to great neighborhoods, people. Real neighborhoods, not isolated townships.
