Roundup: Scrabble Repurposed

We usually clean up in a good game of Scrabble, so we appreciated these DIY projects using the game's board, tiles and racks. The diversity of available materials, vintage nostalgia and perennial popularity of type is fertile ground for the crafty among us.

This Scrabble board picture frame (via Craft:) uses the Scrabble grid as a cutout guide to make a multi-picture frame.

The variations in tone of the hand-beveled Scrabble tiles on this keyboard (via Make:) make it look worn-in, in a good way.

No cutting or hand-beveling is required for this simple idea: old Scrabble boards as place mats, and the tiles and racks as place cards.

There are also tons of people using Scrabble tiles to make art. Jewelery is the most popular, but I use them to make micropaintings that you can stick to any magnetic surface.

OMG! I love this, such a cute idea... This is one of of those, "Why didn't I think of that", moments! I want that keyboard, and the next time I have a party... Here come the Scrabble Letters for the seating chart!

I'm a Scrabble nut. I've always thought the tiles were pretty and had a nice feel to them, but never would have thought to do a keyboard. That is marvelous! I want one.

I have used scrabble tiles in my scrapbook for layouts that look similar to the frame above. Very cute ideas.

i LOVE scrabble, and all of my friends are also obsessed. i also love type as decor, so these ideas are fantastic!! i have to find a way to incorporate this in my home!!!

I love this post! My wife proposed to me with scrabble tiles last Spring. Our "Save the Date" wedding cards will be something along this theme... great ideas here! And Cat Rocketship, your micro-paintings kick ass.

BTW I adore that keyboard and actually went so far as looking into the purchase when I saw it over on unplggd.com. Then I found out that Datamancer's custom keyboards average around "$1200 to $1500 or more..." It doesn't look quite as cool anymore. It just looks really damned expensive. Like, I see a dollar sign where the "S" key is. And where every other key is, too...

I can't AFFORD it, but $1200-1500 seems totally understandable when you consider the work in crafting something like that which actually functions.
