Looking for an inexpensive option for a single-night stay in Sacramento, we recently stumbled upon this fantastic 26-room gem of a hotel. Slightly off the beaten path (if your aim is downtown Sacramento) on Del Paso Boulevard in North Sacramento, The Greens Hotel is an unexpected retro-hip spot. We were thrilled to find this boutique hotel in a funky neighborhood for just $89 a night. Take a look…

Knowing very little about the hotel and what to expect upon our arrival, we were completely unaware of the treat that lay before us. Frankly, the hotel was an afterthought to the trip as a whole. Immediately upon our arrival, I could see that extra attention to modern design had been taken to the overall design, but it was the moment that I saw the big, bold letters identifying each room that I realized what we were in for—much more than your typical fill-in-the-blank hotel experience.

Dan Friedlander, owner of the furniture design company Limn that Apartment Therapy featured here, has remodeled this mid-century era motel in a neighborhood that has been “in transition,” so to speak, for years. Opening with other high-end businesses just around the corner from Limn, The Greens Hotel brings a young, design forward attitude to the neighborhood. Each room is painted a bold, bright color, and is outfitted with custom beds and headboards and other furniture from Limn. On the walls are original works from emerging local artists, complete with artist information cards and prices.

Outside, the grounds have been xeriscaped with small gardens and huge potted plant arrangements. Funky AstroTurf lawns and plenty of seating for outdoor lounging are worked into the existing parking lot area.

From the eclectic collection of books in each room to the vintage terrarium beneath available mailboxes, The Greens Hotel quickly became our go-to lodging when we travel to Sacramento. It’s also worth noting that The Greens is an eco-conscious hotel, offering all-natural products in its rooms, and maintaining green housekeeping practices.

We were expecting a forgettable stay in a budget hotel. What we got was a fanciful mini-vacation in a well-appointed, affordable boutique hotel.

I love the awnings and exteriors (except for the giant Playschool letters over the doorways)

...but those rooms are excruciatingly ugly.

I had the oppertunity to stay at this hotel. The rooms ROCK!!! You just have to like different colors, and understand that you probably aren't going to be looking at the walls that much.

They have ultra comfy beds, and linnens, and the towels are better than at any hotel I have ever stayed at (Like the DoubleTree, or a few other nice hotels for over $100 a night.)

You just have to like the different approach they have done with this hotel, or not. And if you don't then don't stay there.

It really is AWESOME!!! I know my friends and I who live in Sacramento want to go stay the night, just for a mini vacation.

I HIGHLY RECOMEND checking this place out if you are ever in Sacramento, and like the IKEA type world.

I live in Sacramento, and the Greens is a great place for my out-of-town guests to stay. (I can only fit so many people in my tiny house!) And while you are there, check out Big Idea which is located right next door. They do some of the best community theater in the area.

I've been wondering what was behind that cool wall for a while now. Will have to check it out in person.

If you decide to stay there, check out Enotria for dinner or brunch (http://www.enotria.com/). Short walk from the hotel, but be careful crossing the street. Arden and Del Paso is aweful!

Also, great access to Light Rail and bus service.

This is nice, and unique, however on valentines day I went to sacramento and stayed at a nice room in the Marriott for $75.

Their website says "starting at $89", but I must say I appreciate their creativity. Marriott is a little predictable 4 star.

Not to be a complete killjoy, but the Del Paso area is an •extremely• high crime area... gangs, junkies, etc... some of us that live here would never dream of being in Del Paso •any• time after dark (or much during the day for that matter...).

Anyone thinking of staying in the Del Paso area should do their research especially if they think they can walk around safe at night (something I would *never* recommend). I advise finding cheap stays downtown or even in midtown...not much price difference, plus you have a better chance of walking around at night enjoying the sites and not getting stabbed, raped or shot.

If you can handle the Tenderloin and stretches of Market Street, I think you can handle Del Paso Blvd. It's a quick ride into downtown and if you are a smart and aware individual that uses common sense you shouldn't have too much trouble. I know you are just trying to make people aware that it's not all roses on that street, but it has potential. I'll have to check that place out...looks great!
