The Ring House

Last week the Wallpaper* Design Awards were announced. The best new private house: The Ring House, a retreat in a forest near Tokyo. Designed by Takei-Nabeshima-Architects (TNA), the house is wrapped in rings of glass and wood. Gorgeous.

This was in Architectural Record's award winners, called Record Houses, last April. I think it was on the cover. Lots of pictures and floor plans.

Gorgeous but would never get a building permit/ C of O. Would totally fail on the energy calculations for a single family residence.

OK, that is one house I would definitely not watch scary movies in. After sundown, I would feel like I was constantly being watched by some lurker/creature in the forest.

I saw this house in a design documentary on TV. You would not believe how much planning went into it to ensure that the clean horizontal lines were not broken by plumbing, kitchen cabinets and other necessities. It deserves all of its awards.
