apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

The View From 12 + Alder

We've covered 12 + Alder on Apartment Therapy before, but we recently took a second look at the Portland home and had to share with you this image of the view across the street...

The cathedral is not only a beautiful neighbor, it's inspiration for some of the house's design elements: The cathedral's slate roof informed the material selection in the entry (pictured below) and the framing of that view is no accident.

What buildings neighbor your home? Does your building relate to its neighbors in any special way?

When I purchased my home I had a choice between two identical units in a 1927 building (one was a mirror image of the other). Although one had more privacy it faced a 1960's high rise completely out of scale for the neighborhood. The other with less privacy faced a beautiful old building completely in character for the neighborhood. I gave up privacy to have a view that I felt complimented my home.
