Inspiring Public Art: Fishing Light by Luz Interruptus

File this one under "More Reasons We Wish We'd Spent the Weekend in France": The anonymous Spanish arts collective Luz Interruptus installed these stunning cages in the little town of Maubeuge, France, for the Les Folies arts festival in June. The effect of the golden cages, lit up at night and suspended over the river from fishing poles, looks positively enchanting. Seems like an idea that could inspire a great DIY project...

Using bird cages as backyard lanterns could be a gorgeous way to light up your summer evenings. Spray paint the cages gold, line the bottom with gold foil (available at art supply stores), and thread a lantern bulb into the cage for a soft yellow light.

Of course, the drama and beauty of Fishing Light, the Luz Interruptus project, can probably never be reproduced; it took the artists two days to install all of the cages along the rail of the bridge in Maubeuge. But there are plenty of photos on their site that document both the installation and the finished product. Their other public art projects, which all in some way involve light and the night landscape, are also fun to peruse.
