apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Before & After: Liz's Apartment by Furbish Design

As much as we love to peruse the portfolios of interior designers, the idea of actually hiring a decorator has never been on the table. It's always seemed like an option meant only for those equipped to fill their giant mansions with $200-a-yard fabrics. But Jamie Meares, whose gorgeous blog, I Suwannee, is a daily must-read, has a different idea of what a design experience should be. With her new venture, Furbish, she hopes to offer affordable help, guiding clients to affordable solutions that embrace their personal style. Check out what she managed to do with Liz's apartment for under $500...

The top row of photos shows the amazing transformation of Liz's apartment, and the bottom row are a few glimpses into Jamie's own home (from a great house tour and interview on Indie NC). As you can see if you scroll through the top, Jamie designed the new rooms around the pieces that worked—the cute orange shell rocker, the gray pin-tucked duvet, and so on. She helped Liz to fluff, rearrange and re-organize, and to navigate ebay and craigslist in search of cheap, charming accents. You can see some more photos of the apartment on Jamie's blog.

Furbish is based in North Carolina, but Jamie also works with clients via e-mail (Liz, for example, lives in Detroit). Her approach is interactive, with the goal of helping clients identify their personal style and apply it in their homes over the long term. She provides a design scheme, complete with a floor plan and suggestions for paint colors, fabrics, and other products sourced within the client's budget. If you read I Suwannee at all, you know that Jamie's got a real talent for uncovering thrifted treasures, and she hopes to help her clients cultivate this skill as well.

Check out the Furbish web site for more info, or e-mail Jamie at info@furbishdesign.com for her rates. And by all means click over to I Suwannee, where many more of Jamie's projects and ideas are available for your daily reading pleasure.

Where oh where oh where did you get that Detroit poster/picture?!? I recently had to move away from the Detroit area (to find a job after college) and would love that.

the frame on the expedit... it looks nice, but that seems to block the access a bit

The wire thing looks like a vintage bingo cage.

david: isn't that a bingo ball jumbler? (obviously i don't know the terminology, but i saw one at a vintage shop recently.)

This is great - it's lovely without being precious or impractical or incredibly staged like so many magazine shoots. It's a real home. Well done!

I'm sorry, I don't get it. The makeover is two shots of a bookcase and a new rug and cleaned up room. It looks like they just took all the stuff lying around and put in shelves and added a rug. No shots of the desk area , where is the tv, all the stuff? Basically, it drives me nuts when before and after shots don't show the same areas/functions.

enamorada,

go check out the other shots with the link provided. tv is there. desk is there.

clearly AT didn't include every single angle. i'm sorry you've let that upset you so much.

I like the idea of the internet consulting business. I saw a $500 budget quoted -- I am guessing for furnishings and supplies? What's the fee for the service, though? (I could have missed it, I looked but didn't read at i Suannee.) This is the kind of decorating service that could make a lot of people without hefty budgets love their homes!

Nice. What a clean makeover; they removed all clutters and placed everything in their designated places. I like the book shelf. the rugs look kinda funky or groovy to me but I like them. And is that a leather bed sheet?

The Detroit poster is linked through the Furbish site above. Here's a shortcut:

Like it. Is there anyone like this actually in the Bay Area? My apartment is far too strange to explain in pictures. Trust me.

I recognize a fellow lawyer's place anywhere by the standard case books in the bottom row of bookshelves.

One tiny complaint: the framed picture hanging on the front of the white bookcase in the living room. It's just so oddly placed

Hiring a designer isn't always an expensive proposition, nor is it only something wealthy people do. I've hired an interior designer for a few hours of consultation a couple of times. Some won't do hourly rates or very small jobs, but many are quite willing.

But you're probably not going to score points with any prospects by using the terms interior designer and decorator interchangeably. I've learned the respective parties have strong preferences for how their work (and professions are labeled).

i spy casebooks (i think). mine are hidden in a closet waiting to be sold, but now i wish i had a cheery expedit to house them. love the transformation; i bet the owner feels like a million.

first, where is that platner-esque side table from? second, wonderful job overall. i like hearing about people like jamie. and lol at a bingo jumbler holding eggs...you could number the eggs and have some kind of crazy bingo breakfast game! what fun!

I adore the rug! Where is it from? It's such a nice change from the shag carpet look.

the bedspread has not changed. it is the same one in the before picture. in fact, very little has "changed." things have just been cleaned up and displayed better. annnnnd the most important part of this makeover: the after pictures were done in quality photography. the before pictures were photoshopped to bland out the colors.

Lovely, but it can't compare to the Imperial Battle Hippo bedroom treatment.

Was your client offered that option?http://www.isuwannee.com/2009/03/rock-it-don-stop-it.html

beautiful home!

dude, ikea's expedit bookcases are awesome. i have the tv/media one in black. one thing i hate about black furniture (learning it the hardway) is all the freaking dust!! waaa!! i'm thinking about buying the little doors to make every shelf a cabinet instead now.
