Kijiji Free Local Classifieds

4-11-kijiji.jpg
We're big fans of Craigslist - most of the furniture in our house has been bought through the bare-bones online classifieds system and we've also had a lot of luck selling the pieces we've grown tired of on the site. Until today we've never seen a competitor that we thought even came close to being as easy and free to use, and then someone sent us a link to Kijiji.

It's basic set up is a lot like CL, but the look is much more polished. They've also added some features that Craigslist doesn't have, including thumbnails of photos and descriptions that show up when you search listings (no need to click into the ad,) and the ability to e-mail the person from the site, eliminating the annoying copying and pasting of an e-mail address or opening up of a separate mail application.

Since Kijiji is relatively new, there's not that much on it yet - as of this posting there were only 229 items for sale in the Bay Area furniture section. But this is the first time we've seen a serious contender move into the arena with Craigslist.

What do you think? Will you give Kijiji a try? Or are you loyal to trusty old CL till the end?

I found it a little clunky to use. I recently discovered this free download:
http://www.craigstoolbox.com/post/Ad-Preview-Extension-for-Firefox.aspx

It allows you to see the photos on Craiglist that are included in a listing without clicking the actual listing open. If you roll over the thumbnail, the photos show up real size. It think it's quite wonderful.

Why on earth would you use Kijiji? Ebay owns Kijiji. It will be for-profit business that will ultimately be looking to make money off of users with ads and data mining. Craigslist is a shining example of a great internet resource that is non-profit, highly privacy-oriented, honest, and simple.

Maybe the folks at AT should spend a little time learning to configure their web browsers so that the don't have to waste their precious time "with the annoying copying and pasting of an e-mail address or opening up of a separate mail application".

I downloaded Craig's Toolbox Image Preview Ext too. So, with that, Kijiji's got nothin' on CL.

I also wasn't too impressed but it definitely has potential. The site has a better look than CL & the pictures are nice but there aren't enough filters. They especially need to add a price range filter and a filter for "by owner only" to filter out some of the spam. They also only have a filter by wide geographic area but not by city. Without these filters and with only a few postings up so far I'm afraid this site isn't too exciting yet.

For some reason Kijiji is loads more popular up my way (Nova Scotia), although there is a halifax.craigslist.ca. I go where the ads are! Sadly, those ads don't often have anything good.

Oh, and as a frequent Kijiji user, I DO like it more than CL. It is easier to use and far easier to browse. The search feature works great. The real lack is no user feedback about ads, but it does show you if other people have put an offer in on something and how much it went for. They claim they don't sell your info, but their privacy policy is slightly less stringent than CL.

I find in my area, items are priced a lot higher on Kijiji - I have been browsing Kijiji for months and have yet to find a single deal.

That, and I hate the name.

The question is: are Kijiji users as flaky as Craig's Listers?

Kijiji has really taken off in Montreal, where they wisely made a French interface. Craigslist decided to go English-only here and really hasn't proved to be popular at all, so all the good stuff is on Kijiji.

Well, my city isn't on Kijiji, and there aren't as many categories in the for sale section, particularly the one I browse the most (musical instruments). I also hate their categories for selling pets, which is thankfully a no-no on Craigslist. So, definitely not a fan of Kijiji.

I have noticed that it is more popular up in Canada than it is here in the States. I've known about it for quite some time but I've maybe visited it a total of 4 times. There's no user base there in my area so I stick with CL.

Personally I don't care if Kijiiji is owned by e-bay (who also owns a chunk of CL). I'm also not a "lowest price" shopper - anything there I've seen is still less than retail. My only gripe is lack of a user base - not many ads. I do like the picture previews though.

It's only a matter of time till the luddites at CL manage to kill off the Firefox thingie, by the way.

They killed a really good thing when they blocked Listpic.

Listpic was killed because it was leeching off CL's bandwidth, whereas the Image Preview Extension is just a browser extension. It won't interfere with traffic/bandwidth, so it's not subject to the same scrutiny as Listpic was.
