Inspired by San Franciso's Universal Café and its "elegant austerity," Sergio and Suzanne Feld set out to renovate their cramped and dark kitchen in their 1905 flat. Suzanne contacted Larissa Sands of Sands Architects (the team behind the café's design) for help. The result of their design is a wonderfully modern, clean and industrial kitchen.

While this remodel is from a 2004 issue of Dwell Magazine, the resulting space is still inspiring and current today. The new kitchen is a mix of industrial fixtures (laboratory faucets, lab glass pendant lamps, stainless steel appliances and those stunning rolling steel-framed panels of textured glass acting as cabinet doors) and warmer elements (fir floors, a fire clay farm sink, marble counter tops and walnut shelving).

Those rolling steel and glass doors make my heart pitter patter every time I see this photo.

I feel certain that AT featured this kitchen a while back, but I can't find it in the archives. Maybe it's been so long, it's new again!

I remember seeing this kitchen before. Not sure if it was just Dwell or AT. Either way, it's worth reposting because it's creative, inspiring, and beautiful.

Do you think the open shelving was custom or can they be purchased somewhere? I know IKEA makes something similar, but what other options are there?
Thank you!

Very cool! Love the sliding glass panels.

I live across the street from Universal, and I love everything about their decor, so seeing it in a house was even better. I like it so much that I don't mind seeing it featured here twice. ;-)

I love the sliding glass panels! I'm usually a traditionalist but I am really digging this.

my first reaction was to drool, but I really only like the marble countertops and that gorgeous sink. the open cabinets under the stove are weird and I don't dig that the upper cabinets are just randomly covered.
it's a gorgeous concept and so nicely done...just not for me.

While those sliding glass panels look cool, they don't serve much purpose. I think you either have cabinet doors that keep the dust & grease off things, or you have open shelves. Sliding panels would probably just get on my nerves in the day-to-day...

Man, those open shelves with sliding doors are the perfect solution for my current space. Does anyone have any pointers as to where I could go to buy the pieces of it? Or do we think it's all custom work?

Answering my own question: www.barndoorhardware.com is a good place to start, looks like.

I always keep my eyes open when it comes to commercial design. Restaurants can be great places for inspiration because I think architects and designers get really excited at the opportunity to design something that gets so much use--I like to think restaurants are fun (yet obviously serious) projects for them to do .
I love the glass and steel work in this kitchen. I was recently at the intelligentsia coffee in Venice, CA and they have really pushed the glass and steel envelope there.
I think it's cool when people take away inspiration from restaurants (pun intended.) I'd say if you walk away from a meal at a restaurant with more than just a satisfied stomach you have definitely gotten your money's worth!

as was said previously; "While those sliding glass panels look cool, they don't serve much purpose."
they're great looking as decorative gadgets....

I dig it. It's kind of a "modern farmhouse" feel to it. And I hate modern. But the deep sink, the wood and the antique-feeling fixtures really soften that.

Such a beautiful and unique spin on the open shelf concept.
