You can't get much for $6.99 these days. Even the British shelter magazines we love cost more than that.
However, Ikea's GUSLE table lamp is just $6.99, and it's one of their few really good, inexpensive products. The Japanese-style paper shade gives a beautiful ambient light. We've used it in various rooms in several apartments, and it's currently our bedside lamp. (We even saw it used as such in an architect's sleek and lovely bedroom on a Canadian home television show recently.)

I ditto Jenny. I had 4 of these for about 8 years and was depressed when they finally died. Always received compliments.
A good example that syle isn't always expensive, and, as for disposable, the paper is recyclable and the wire can be used in any manner of creative ways. Plus, very romantic lighting in a bedroom....hmmm....I should buy more yes?
I have an earlier, rounded version of this Ikea lamp that I've had for 6 or 7 years, and I love it! I've moved with it several times, and there are some tiny tears, but mostly it's held up very well. It's on my desk at work, and it helps to warm up the sickly flourescent overhead light. I often get compliments on it. I'm a fan!
Do people read in their beds anymore? I do, for one, and this lamp is horrible for reading. It's certainly not bright enough, and what light it does provide is extremely diffused, thanks to the rice paper cover. It's great as an ambient light, but as a bedside light it is an extremely poor choice. I remember having it a couple of years ago and thinking that I was only putting up with it until I had more money for a real lamp. Then again, if all you care about it whether your skin glows with radiance during sex, by all means, go for it.
curious_design,
I often read in bed, and I hate bright lights. The light is perfect for when I read, but it's because I live in a very small space with very low, sloping ceilings, and a lot of white paint. The lamp didn't work as a bedside lamp in other apartments, and then it was used as an ambient light elsewhere.
I have that lamp too, I've had it maybe 6 years. I got it from my grandma who lives by the IKEA in PA, (this was before Minneapolis had an IKEA). I've moved twice since and its still in perfect shape and I've never had to change the light blub! (yea! for compact flourecesnt!) I agree that this lamp is not a great reading lamp. I use it for ambient light in my living room.
