Droog's Hang On Easy Diffuser

droog_diffuser_top.jpg

Let's face it: A plain, bare lightbulb can often be unattractive ... and creepy. It makes us think of horror-movie scenes where a single, dangling bulb is the only source of light in a windowless basement. But thanks to the "Hang On Easy Diffuser" by Droog, the bare bulb is on its way to extinction (we hope).

The diffuser, which is a brand-new design for Droog, takes just a few seconds to hang. And just like that, you've got yourself a pretty light fixture to replace that bare bulb.

The "Hang On Easy Diffuser" retails for $99.

The idea is a good one but I am not a fan of the big ugly seam (which seems like it belongs on a cheap knockoff of a droog design) or the $99 price tag. Any number of nice pendant lamps can be had for that price.

So, $99 for a 1 ft. plastic sphere with a small cutout.

Ugly and overpriced. I prefer the Chinese paper balls for this.

The presence of the seam would suggest to me the halves were vacuum-formed and then ultrasonically welded together, which is just about the cheapest way it could have been done. Someone's making a healthy margin on this one...

then again, i could just go cut the same size hole in a gallon milk jug...: ). When I first saw this blogged a week or so ago, i did scour the web for polypropylene plastic globes/balls...if someone is willing to do the research/legwork, you could probably get about 30 globes like this for the same cost, without the special hole. The closest I got to the same material/size were the largest size plastic balls they use for industrial float barriers, and then I gave up.

they also make hexagonal floats, i wonder if those would work also...
