We find these outdoor lights are best appreciated at a distance, and conceptually at that, as they give the effect of light dripping up, down and sideways from the surface they are mounted on.
At about 40" high, the lights would are pretty imposing, but seem to cast a pleasing glow. Designed by Hopf & Wortmann for Next, each one is made to order, and not cheap: $646
here.
There has had to have been some inspirational process involved in this that I can appreciate. That said, I think it looks science fiction or comic book like, in the way when something bad happens and the world starts leaking, you're probably kind of screwed.

recently I saw on a blog a teardrop white lamp for $199 that I keep picturing in my house but don't recall what is was called or where I saw it

I'd be forced to hang these upside down. Upward dripping might be conceptually amusing, but not for long.
