Due to some changes in our living situation, we're currently making some changes to our living space. Our latest project has been replacing the large white paper lantern above the bed with this new fixture - a grouping of 24 small paper lanterns hung together.
We picked up the orange and red lanterns at Michael's on sale a month or so ago for $0.22 each, bringing the grand total of this in under $6. Yes, it's a little red-light-special at night, but since we have three other (white) light sources in the room we've decided we don't mind. And, most importantly, we think it's pretty fun.

totally dig this. a friend of mine had put together something similar to that at her old place. one question though, how do prevent the paper lanterns from catching fire? I'm assuming the bulb can get pretty hot.

fun! will you paint the walls white for more contrast? this room seems really "squash colors" saturated.

OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS ROOM! It makes me miss my orange and pink room. :(
The light reminds me of little sea creatures. The weird ones... I have no idea what they're called, hehe.

Super cute. How do you have them strung together and rigged up? And does it pose any safety concerns?

Is this a fire hazard?

Thanks guys! There's a 60 watt CFL bulb nestled in the middle, which stays cool to the touch so no fire hazard. I'll do a close up later this week to show how I strung them.

hmmm this looks really cheap.

it looks like a bunch of helium balloons that have floated to the ceiling waiting for someone to pull down. with nothing else around it, it looks a little stark, like it's just...there. BAM! here's a bunch of lanterns.

What an odd choice. The room is simple with good colors and then this cheap-looking "thing" hanging from the ceiling. Take it down and re-think.
