at:sf,i recently lost the window that had provided most of the natural light in living room (ginormous lot-line building constructed next door). i like the looks & function of this lamp, but not the $3,000+ price tag. calling on all lighting mavens: can you suggest something similar that is in the $200-$300 neighborhood?
thanks! sam on 15th st.

That's a very unique lamp. I would think your best bet is having one made similar. It looks like just a board with 4 holes cut out, 2 48" long flourescent tubes, and yeah...
Know anyone who's good with power tools?

at $149... http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100038035&N=10000003 9040
you could use several of these but obviously would add up to more than you stated you'd like to spend.

I saw in a magazine a similar but long, rectangular fixture like this used to simulate a window in a bathroom.

Go to Beronio lumbar and buy a beautiful, clear 8 or 6 foot doug fir 1 x 12. Mount home depot under cabinet lights to one side and lean it against the wall. Give the wood a nice finish or leave it natural, Douglas fir has an extraordinarily beautiful grain pattern. These closet doors are doug fir veneer I stripped and refinished to a champagne blonde varnish. Tough as paint.

sam here...
thanks for the good ideas.
i think a little prototyping is in order here. i am gonna construct a fomcore mock-up and attach an undercounter fluorescent jobbie i have around somewhere to the backside and judge the results.
i was thinking this thing could probably be fabricated for my by some place such as Tap Plastic, then the electrical added myself.
thanks again & if i get somewhere i will send an update to AT
