Smith & Hawken Cafe Light String

6-5-s&hlights.jpg

The other day we could hear the handymen replacing the fence in our backyard -- they were laughing about the "water bulbs." They were actually talking about the Smith & Hawken Cafe Light Strings hanging over our patio. They were there when we moved in, and we've always found it fascinating that although most of the clear glass bulbs are full of rainwater, the light strings still work.

Obviously the handymen also found it entertaining.

We assume that eventually they'll stop working. But since we really love the festive look and are impressed with their sturdiness, we'll undoubtedly end up buying more.

$39 at Smith & Hawken. Or, as a friend pointed out, $19.99 at Target.

Sturdy, really? I bought 2 strings of these, took one of them out of its box, accidentally dropped it about 2 feet onto my deck, and one of the bulbs shattered. Wahhh. Then I got too scared to mess with them (broken glass on the deck is bad news since it falls down between the cracks), and haven't touched them since last summer.
