Linen and Beech Laundry Basket

4-10-08-laundry-basket.jpg

It's been a while since we've seen such an attractive laundry basket, and we liked it for a couple of reasons: a) the triangle shape makes better use of a bedroom corner and b) we were getting tired of woven baskets and never liked the purely utilitarian metal-and-canvas ones.

Sold by UK retailer Nigel's Eco Store for £54.99, the basket holds an (English) load and half of laundry, which we may hazard a guess is smaller than an American load (can anyone back that up?). The site actually advocates burying the basket in the yard when its usefulness in your home has come to an end.

ooh i can. i lived in england for six years (just moved back in june) and fought with those dreadfully small washing machines. a load is about 2 pairs of jeans and a couple of shirts. doing laundry for 2 people (about a weeks worth of dirty clothes) took me well over 12 hours... ugh! so yes, that's a small basket.. not worth the money..

darn. I love the look but it needs to be a bit larger for it to be functional (for me at least).

I agree with jick - I'm so sick of the laundry hampers I've seen and love the look of this one, but it's useless to me if it is small.
It would be great to see an AT post on what's out there.

I spent two years in England and we had a normal sized washer and dryer . . . maybe the difference is that we lived in a house out in the semi-country, not in a city apartment?

That's quite expensive for a laundry basket.

If you have the dough, you could buy 2-3 baskets and put them all together. That way you can separate your colors, darks, whites, delicates, etc.

I keep Rubbermaid will make a normal laundry basket with 2-3 different partitions. That way, I can sort as I got through my clothes, instead of spending 20 minutes doing that before the big haul to the laundromat.

I have something similar (wood cross slats, canvas bag) but square. I bought it from Target a couple years ago, and I can't remember what I paid for it, but I'm quite sure I wouldn't have spent over $25.
