A Room Three Ways
California Home+Design Magazine

041509 gary spain.jpgThe possibilities for creating a well-designed room are endless, and never is that more apparent than when the same room is completely transformed through its decor. SF-based interior designer Gary Spain used his living room to show three distinct looks you can achieve through a couple dramatic touches...

Spain used the same couch, table and wall color in all three rooms and relied on the lighting, rugs and wall decor (and, okay, a couple of fabulous chairs too) to create three distinct looks. We love the giant clock in the first transformation and the striped chairs in the third. Check out all three rooms over at California Home+Design, and let us know which one you like.

I hate number 1. Number 2 is far, far too trendy. Number 3 is passable, though I'm not a fan of the patterned cushions on the couch. There are too many competing patterns, and I think I would prefer a plain couch.

Where is the cushion with the face printed on it from?

I actually rather like Room #1.

I like all three rooms, but they're a little similar (neoclassical pieces mixed with modern designer). I would have liked to see Spain do something dramatically different with each decor.

I fancy the "Cool Hunter" decor style the best. I'm a girl who loves color and the added pops of hot pink looked great against the freshness of the white. I just loved the whole layout of the room.

The first room is fantastic - I love the clock, and want a light just like that one. The others are a bit busy for me, but I can see the appeal.

If that is a functioning clock in the first picture, it would drive me nuts. How could you relax with a book or a cup of tea while the seconds are ticking away? Plus, think how loud it would be. If it's not functioning, it's just plain silly.

I like #3 the best although I wouldn't have chosen those chairs and it all looks a little too much like a hotel lobby. The first one is fun, but a little too constructed to be an actual home. #2 is way too cutesy & again constructed for me!
Generally, I find the interiors to be less about making good and personal living spaces and more about constructing stages for photo shoots.

cherry-picked pieces from each one would make a fantastic room

I like elements from each of the rooms, but I can't really pick one room that surpasses all the others.

where do you get a round table like that, it' looks as though it rises dining and falls to coffee table height.

I don't love or hate any of the rooms. The title "A Room Three Ways" was seriously misleading, though - these rooms are all the same style, just different accessories. Even the couch table two side chairs doesn't change. I'd love to see a room done in different ways, by different people, in different styles, with different furniture.

IMHO, picture one looks like 80's SOHO, pic two is "too" current. Pic three looks like something that would have been featured in a side article for the late, great magazine, Domino.

I think the "face pillow" is made by Fornasetti. I know Barneys carries this vendor.
