The Best Seat in the House

1-9-08 best seat in the house.jpgEvery home should have one: a chair in which to waste the better part of a Sunday. So what are the requirements? Check out our list after the jump...

  • A large base No dining chairs here, please. The seat of the chair has to be big enough for wiggling around, curling up, and by no means sitting upright.
  • Good light Preferably from a floor or table lamp, so as not to strain the eyes when nestled in with a good book.
  • A flat surface Be it a side table, ottoman with a tray on top, or even an extra wide ledge on a window, you'll need a space to rest a drink or any other necessity.
  • A blanket and pillow on or nearby For maximum comfort, and in case the napping mood should strike...

Anything you would add?

I love the pillow, which looks like it was made using an old peacoat... what a brilliant idea!

My Eames lounge chair fits the bill...comfortable and gorgeous! I found it at an antique store and it only needed a replacement button.

I find myself sitting in it for way too long while surfing the net on my laptop.

An ottoman.

A large seat to curl my feet up under a blanket, a high back, and wings to rest my head. No rocker. A good light with a pull chain I can reach to switch it on or off without uncomfortabling myself. A laptop would also be pretty nifty.

oddly, the papa bear chair (and requisite ottoman) is the most comfortable chair i've ever sat in -- and hope/plan on getting one soon (modernica version). too bad when i get one and people see pix of my house, folks will call it "obvious MCM..." (or a crappy copy that undermines all that is good and sacred)... but i'll be so relaxed from sitting in the chair that i won't want to reach for the bat. ...;)

I love that red chair, my couch is a similar shade of red, in leather.

But I agree that a comfy chair that one can curl up in to read is indeed great, next to a good reading lamp and a surface for a drink or whatever is just the ticket, but how about a good ol' couch for curling up in and doing the same? :-)

I love my Lunna chair from Ikea (got it for a steal at $99 at their winter sale). Each time I want to use it, I have to fight with the cat (sometimes he wins...cause he's so damn cute). Apparently, it's his favorite chair too.

I have had it with MCM-bashing "friends"! Ok, if you're soooo cool, you can just leave all the choice pieces for the rest of us to snap up.

redneckmodern, I have a papa bear chair in brown velvet, and it IS the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in. The wings are perfectly placed for snoozing and the back is perfectly pitched. As much as I love Scandinavian design, it can often be uncomfortable for me as it's been designed for lanky Scandinavians (I'm 5'1"). But somehow the papa bear fits EVERYONE. And it's true, you'll be too mellow to reach for your bat-but if you do, make sure it's made of teak!

I prefer a couch to a chair.

suzy... the lunna chair *is* crazy comfortable. i was a bit disappointed in the overall build quality, but imho, it might be the most comfortable chair ikea makes. i wish it had the same "heft" and build quality (i'd even pay more) as the karlstad (which is notably nearly 3X the price, but fairly well made).

It's got to be a chaise...It would also have the big knitted pillow to cozy up to.

I have a really comfy upholstered chair that was my grandmother's. It's one of those Louis styles that were popular in the early sixties. Very comfy. I can curl my legs up in it, read a book and look out into my backyard.

I do love that chair, but two requirements for my comfy chair are that the back be tall enough for me to rest my head on and that there be some place to prop my feet up (footrest, ottoman, coffee table...)

My 80-plus-year-old Morris chair. I had it reupholstered with really nice cushions and a gorgeous nubby cream fabric. The seat is super-deep for people with long legs, the back is very high, and the wooden arms are angled toward the back in a most pleasing ergonomic way. The chair reclines via a dowel that you lift and move to different notches at the back of each arm.

People are sometimes afraid to sit on it because it's so old, but it is sturdy and wonderful for reading. I have had it in a 1916 Arts & Crafts house, a 1930 cottage, and now a 1945 MCM bi-level, and it has looked great in each one.

It needs to have arms! I hate "reading chairs" that I'll fall out of if I curl up.

Our biggest comfy chair was actually inherited... it's a hideously ugly old La-z-boy recliner that belonged to my grandfather. But it is very, very comfortable for lounging around, even if it doesn't match anything.

Hey redneckmodern, I was actually considering getting the karlstad chair, but it did not feel nearly as comfortable, even though it looks great. In the end I went for comfort over style.

Another vote for the Eames lounge. Near the window for lots of light and fresh air (which it sadly gets even in winter ), a small table with a lamp, plus the ottoman. What really makes it special was a christmas gift from mom - a fleece that is actually PEOPLE sized, instead of the postage stamp 'throws' you get at CVS.
