Welcome one last time to Leah and Nick. Today we get to look at the third of *three* bathroom remodels sent in by Leah (the first is
here and the second
here). We think this one is the most dramatic. Check out the before pic, which is after the jump.
Leah says: In the tiny master bathroom (part of a converted attic bedroom), we took out the leaking toilet, the burnt-orange vanity, and the all-in-one florescent-light-and-medicine-cabinet unit. We also took down the dark wood shutters that obliterated the window, tore down the fake-wood paneling and Swinging-Sixties wallpaper, and ripped up the orange shag rug and the cracked vinyl tiles underneath it (people just really went for it back then, didn't they?).
In their place, we put in the classic-looking Kohler Memoirs pedestal sink and toilet suite, installed a simple medicine cabinet and light fixture, laid down more Marmoleum, painted the walls a crisp apple green with white trim, hung a simple white cotton roman shade from IKEA over the window, and installed chrome towel- and toilet-paper holders.
We learned a lot working on these bathrooms, and look forward to eventually tackling the two bathrooms in our current house. (I should mention that while we designed each bathroom ourselves, chose and purchased everything in them, and lent eager hands to the demo work and painting, we had help from a contractor for our Oakland bathroom and a handful of subcontractors at the Marin house.)
Anyway, hope you enjoy the before-and-afters!
We definitely did. Thank you Leah and Nick!
Oh lord. That exact wallpaper graced the kitchen of the house I grew up in, along with orange formica countertops, dark brown glossy cabinets and - I'm not kidding - brown shag carpet. Who carpets a kitchen?? My mom pulled out the carpet immediately after moving in, but had to live with the wallpaper a little while longer, and the counters and cabinets a LONG while longer. To this day, the color orange makes her livid.
Anyway. This is lovely. What color green is it? I might want a green like that for my kitchen.
It's BEAUTIFUL! I have to say, I almost love that old wallpaper - it's a total hoot!

I agree, that orange flower wallpaper is awesome! I would have left it up and designed around it, if it was in good condition that is. Would have made a cheery colorful bathroom!
The green paint is Benjamin Moore's Stolen Moments (#477). While the orange flowered wallpaper had its kitchy charms, it was torn and moldy in spots and falling off the wall in others -- no option but to tear it all down and start fresh.
Gorgeous and classy!
