Julie sent in pics of her redone bedroom, complete with an almost all-DIY headboard and jewelry tree. She says,
"My biggest accomplishment was the headboard. I've been wanting to make an upholstered headboard for years but have been too scared of the major power tools involved."
However, since my husband bought me a table saw (2 years ago) which I never used, I thought I'd pull up my sleeves and give it a try. Little does he know, the lumber store ended up making all the cuts for me! Shhhh....
Our room is pretty small measuring about 14' x 14.' I think the tall headboard and curtains have added some drama as well as lifting it up making it seem bigger. The dressers were my mother's childhood furniture that she shared with her two sisters. The "jewelry tree" is a branch from our alley that I spray painted and use to place all my necklaces to keep them from getting tangled. I kept the pallette pretty neutral so I have a calming and relaxing place to go at the end of stressful work days."
Thanks Julie! We're sure folks are going to want to know how you upholstered the headboard...
although i would LOVE to copy that jewelry tree idea (i have waaaaaaaaaay too many necklaces!), i think my cat would like it a little too much! really great and simple idea though.
this is great! i've been thinking of building a headboard myself, and i think this has given me the motivation to finally do it!
Seriously would love a step-by-step on the headboard! I just moved into a new place and its crying for a board like yours. I'm power tool-free. Is it as simple as a cut piece of plywood, foam cut to size, fabric and a staple gun?
i must know!
This is gorgeous!
Hey Everyone! When I made the above headboard, I used the instructions from Be Jane (http://www.bejane.com/headboard). The instructions were really great although I did make a few changes to help out with costs. Instead of using the 2" foam from a fabric store (super expensive!), I ended up buying two queen sized egg crate looking foam mats for beds which I layered on top of each other (crate sides facing each other).
I had a really hard time finding the mounting hardware, so I ended up using a 3' wide x1' high board which I had the lumber store cut horizontally in half at a 45 degree angle. This left me with two boards measuring 3' wide x 6" high. One board was mounted to the wall with the angled cut at the top and the other board was mounted to the back of the headboard with the angled cut facing downward. This allowed me to simply place the headboard on the wall so that the mounted board (on the headboard) sits on the board mounted to the wall. Hopefully that makes sense!
Good luck to those of you who try it, it's really not as daunting as it might seem and the entire thing cost me $75!
I love this! The colors are so peaceful and serene and the fabrics give it a luxurious look. The jewelry tree is a great idea, too. I'd love to do that, but I'm sure my kittens would have a field day with it.
I love the colors you used, and especially how you incorporated the dressers that are special to your family into the room. I also really like the way that the art on the wall thematically mirrors the jewelry tree (ingenius idea by the way). It looks great!
everytime i see a sheepskin beside a bed, i swoon a little bit.
does it get dirty?
is it as wonderful as it looks?
Simply gorgeous. Love the simplicity....
Gorgeous! Yes, the curtains do make the room seem bigger/taller. Pretty!
Note to Jamie:
I just picked up one of those sheepskin rugs at Ikea for around $50.
i have a sheepskin from ikea too -- i'm wondering about putting them on the floor though.
i have mine drapped on a chair.
if its on the floor, does it get dingy?
Love the room, especially the lamps. Can you share the 411 on them?
RE: IKEA sheepskins - my sister has a ton of them around her apartment. When they get dirty she just tosses them in the washer. I believe she lets them air-dry. They look great.
Thanks for all the comments! The lamps are made of cork and silver metal and were found at a local thrift store for $3.00 each!
Great score! Looks opulent, rich and luxurious without spending the big moolah...
Congrats Julie! Saw the link on the ASA blog...

How do you get your jewelry tree to stand up? I don't seem to see a base.
What a great room! Congrats!
Very interested to see that you have a long bureau. I want one, but don't know where to put it in my room. It's surprising how many room pics only show two small bedside tables and no other furnishings (a look I love, but couldn't live with!).
Your curtains make the room.
