apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Custom Mailbox by Hector Perez

01_06.05.09_Mailbox.jpgWe usually don't pay too much attention to mailboxes, as we live in a condo and the only thing different about our mailbox from our neighbors is the sticker with the number of the apartment. We came across this modern design by Hector Perez. They are hand made and environmentally green. He also offers a red door option. More photos after the jump...

Hector's design was featured on the Shelterrific website. If you want something modern and different your choices are limited. There are some nice options from DWR. We especially like Line One Mailbox, but it is $900.00. Knobloch and Blomus also make a few that feature modern design but are expensive. Hector's mailbox is $199 and it reminds us of the traditional mailbox, but with a modern twist. The red flag mail indicator is a nice touch.

This is basically identical to the Box Design "Urban" mailboxes made in New Zealand for a few years now and featured 18 months ago in Dwell magazine. Compare for yourself at http://www.vanilladesignstore.com/product.pasp?categoryid=18&productid=35.

iroh - when you have outgoing mail, you raise the red flag so the mailman knows to take your outgoing mail before delivering that day's mail - it's a standard postal process.

$900 for a mailbox. (Good Lord I need one of those super smilies that wiggle when they laugh.)

Seriously, this mailbox may work in a suburban area, but in a rural area it would have to be placed on a steel post to keep from being stolen. Unfortunately, the safety of mailbox posts has to be so they fall over when hit.....rather than causing injury. Thus.....the old fashioned wood post as opposed to a steel post. You can get by with it, but if someone is injured, you'll get a law suit even if THEY hit YOUR box.
