Look!: Amaryllis Bulb in a Birch Bark Tube

12-19-amaryllis.jpg

Housemartin is a floral designer in Portland whose gorgeous arrangements we can never dream of emulating. However, her lovely -- and simple -- amaryllis bulb in a birch bark tube...well, we may be able to do that.

She writes on her blog: I got these from the wholesale market pre-sprouted (the stalks were already 6" tall) but you can get the bulbs and start from there. This variety is so delicate and lovely - it's called Apple Blossom. Each stalk (there were 2 and can be up to 3) is producing 4 flowers. I removed them from their plastic pots. I used a birch bark tube (available through Small Stump) wrapped around a glass cylinder vase. I then placed pea gravel on the bottom, some dirt, placed the bulb on top and then more pea gravel to weight the bulb. I topped it with my favorite moss. They are making a fine addition to our cozy home.
