Look! Aquarabbit's Car Locator

11-3-08-car-locator.jpg

This stroke of genius comes from AT regular and Fall Cure-er aquarabbit, who came up with a creative and attractive solution to the daily challenge of remembering where she left her car.

A magnetic write board in a deep frame holds a pen, magnets and a stylized yet topical picture of a house. The only way this could be cooler (and even then, it's hard to imagine) is if the picture was an actual representation of the neighborhood, and you could stick a magnet where the car is on the map. One could get crazy with car-shaped magnets, or different magnets for guests' cars, too.

maybe an application for your cell phone that sends its gps coordinates to a website that shows a map with your car's location on it.

I am so glad I always know where my car is.

My friends at college did this. We lived on campus so parking was always "fun." They put a campus map on their fridge and each had their own magnet to mark where their cars were.

Here's a cool one with a map, although not quite as pretty:

Yes, writing it down on a memo board. BRILLIANT.

Jason, there are actually a few iPhone apps that do this already! Although they pretty much just make you drop a pin on Google Maps where your car is, but still!

This is such a cute idea though, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble remembering where I left things!

I have a little note on my BlackBerry MemoPad where I record my car's location whenever I park. I even record my car's location at the mall and at the airport.

If I waited until I got to the memo board, I would forget...

patrick, I sure didn't invent the idea of a memo board, but I'm sort of proud that I made it myself, mostly with things I already had lying around the house. I don't have an iphone or fancy gps phone, so I gotta kick it old school.

I can pretty much always remember where my car is parked (I will make an effort to walk past it on the way to work). What I usually forget is what day (and time!) street sweepers come! A $50 fine would more than pay for the construction of this super cute memo board.

My boyfriend uses the 'voice memo' feature on his cell phone. many phones have this rarely used feature. He just holds down a button and records the location and nearby landmarks. Many times, just the act of saying it outloud makes it so he doen't forget where he parked!

Me on the other hand.... Lazy AND forgetful... The lost and wandering stories I could tell you...

Perhaps this is just because I don't own a car... but is this really a problem? I've owned cars in the past and even with street parking I didnt usually have much of a problem remembering where I parked.

modfan, it is a problem if the parking is bad enough that you have to park several blocks away in any direction. Also, I just moved so don't have a residential parking permit yet.. since I've been home this week, I'm having to move my car every two hours! You can imagine how disoriented I'm getting... also the street cleaning is a really good thing to note on the memo board. A lot of streets around here have 6am street cleaning!

I thought for a while about doing the map thing, but needed something right away and was able to make this with stuff I already had. A magnetic map would be great and might be a future project.

This is so cute. I had a similar thing when I livd on a long street and carshared with a friend - we had a map magneted to the hall radiator & a magnet with a pic of the car on it, so when we got in we could just move it. That way the other person knew where to find the car.

aquarabbit--

Sorry, didn't mean that really toward you. Had this been (pun intended) "framed" as: "Look! Cute DIY Memo Board!" I'd have less of an issue. But, um, writing down where you parked your car, on a custom-designed memo board or one bought at the Container Store, seems like a *slightly* silly cause celeb... just sayin.'

And yes you should be proud... but aren't you an artist to begin with? Not that that should make you *less* proud, it just seemed all kinda odd to me. Imho!

No real offense intended. I know you have been a long-time ATer and are quite talented...
