Look! Awesome Vintage Owl Collection

10-29owl.jpgLike the deer, the panda, and the wolf that have become the ubiquitous animals of indie rock band names, the owl has become the clichéd kitsch animal in hipster wares. But you know what? We still give a hoot about cool owl decor. We think this over the top collection of vintage wide-eyed feathered friends, found in an apartment window near Dolores Park, is pretty gosh darn cool (yes, macrame and all).

Okay, we hear you -- owl haters and dust and clutter phobics, especially -- this collection is not for everyone, but we love kitsch and the people who collect it.

Anyone out there with a cool collection of kitsch that you'd like to share with us?

I swear if I ever see a macrame owl in anyone's home I will walk straight out and never return. It's the hipster home decor equivalent of vintage white patent shoes.

Most owls are solitary creatures.

Haha! I walked by that on Thursday and snapped a photo so I could post it here. Too bad the photo didn't turn out! Cheers!

I can't help but feel slightly annoyed at the current owl trend. I had my little wooden owls years ago :( (I've teamed them up with a wooden duck my grandfather made, does that make it better?)

My grandmother collected owls for 20 years. In my traveling around the country I'd pick her up owls in random places; one of her favorites being the one made out of seashells I bought at some roadside antique store in VT for about $2. Her collection ranged from tacky ones like that to gorgeous glass ones.

After she passed the family split the owls up, most of us taking back ones we'd bought her. Now we've all got little reminders of her in our homes. I'm sure I'm not the only one in the family that smiles every time I look at one. She died 2 years ago and I still have the urge to buy every owl I see as a gift for her. She'd have loved the above display. Hell, she had a few of those same ones in her house.

We actually had a barn which barn owls frequented where I grew up. I've always loved them, lots and lots. But I don't have much owl decor, oddly. we have some deer decor, but that's partly because my boyfriend's band is The Dear Hunter (not thedeerhunter, totally different scene.)
