In honor of Pet Month, we submit this animal mural snapped last week (through the pink security bars) while visiting some friends in their new digs on Pacific and Taylor in Chinatown.
Usually when you utter the words "mural" and "San Francisco" in the same breath people think of the Mission. But painted walls abound all over this city. This fanciful one covers the entire street-facing facade of a residential building and includes a dragon as well as a tiger, birds, a snake, and a ram. There's got to be an interesting story behind it. Anyone know?

well, I'll take a shot at this.. great mural by the way! With the exception of the birds ( common in chinese paintings), the rest are animals of the chinese zodiac. It could be that the man is the Jade Emperor, and the animals are racing to him to compete to see who will be the first animal in the zodiac.
Below is a link to the complete story.

are those birds? they look like they might be bats - Chinese symbol of good luck.
those are all the animals in the chinese zodiac...
holly
yup, those are bats, not birds. bats are good. i'm a dragon. dragons are very good (and not very modest).
it is great...pastel warmth & w/ out the "we are the world" puke factor some murals have...luv the bats!
(by the way, i like the jazz mural on a corner building nearby in north beach, faded, if it's still there.
speaking of mission murals tho, besides Balmy Street kinds,
the women's building , entirely muralled is still just on fire!
those are some lucky neighbors)
yeah, those are bats. i didn't really look that closely...
