apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look!: Iron Gates
San Francisco

8-22gates01.jpgSometimes the most mundane things suddenly tickle your fancy. This is what happened to us and the iron gates that bar the doors of houses and apartment buildings in San Francisco. One day we were walking in our neighborhood when we were struck by the variety and designs of these security gates.

8-22gates02.jpgSome of them are geometric in design.

8-22gate03.jpgOthers are swirly and elegant.

8-22gates04.jpgAnd some are even whimsical and one-of-a-kind.

In a magazine not long ago I saw a set of exterior iron gates installed inside a house : the were used to divide an entrance hall. The result was very gorgeous and classy.

We have the swirly and elegant pattern. We also have matching metal 'balconies'. On first moving in, the pleasant surprise for us was hearing the rain hit the balconies. It is a pretty little symphony of sound.

I like the first "whimsical" one. How pretty.

Lori, you could do it with PhotoShop. Just set up a grid, size the photos appropriately, import them into a single file like the photo at the top of this page. Add any lettering and take the finished png file to your local printer or Kinkos.

I'm not a very technical person and I managed to make a calendar out of some family photos. You can download a free 30 day trial of the latest Photoshop at adobe.com. It isn't completely intuitive, but I bet there are some pretty good coaches in this very group.

Good luck.
