apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

A while ago we visited a friend who lives near Baker Beach in former army barracks at the Presidio. Although fugly from the outside, we were pleasantly surprised by the airy, contemporary layout of the interior, including an open stairway between the first and second floors. It was separated from the main room by a trellis not unlike this one. Similar to what you see above, albeit a far less attractive rendering.

The Presidio apartment's stairway trellis is vintage 70's. We think Pentagram's Biber has evolved the idea considerably, and we like the way it provides additional safety (for kids) and spatial separation without blocking light or sight lines. A similar idea could be used anywhere in a multi-functioning room to divvy off some space for dining or workspace.
