Beating out over a thousand other entries, Mill Valley's Catherine Golden was the winner of Domino magazine's first-ever decorating contest. The announcement ran in the February issue's "Letter from the Editor," which just hit the newsstands this week. While the contest only covered one room (the sitting area of her master bedroom is shown above), we were lucky enough to get a peek at the rest of Catherine's home:

In her entryway, Catherine painted, lime-washed and stenciled the trellis pattern.

The entryway walls took her a couple of weekends to complete.

She removed several shelves to create a desk niche. The pink behind the desk took four layers to achieve. "The thing I love most is working with color," she said. The top of the desk will be covered with white vinyl, to give it the look of leather.

In the sitting room, Catherine painted and tiled the fireplace. It is another work in progress, as she's currently contemplating a different tile job.
Thanks, Catherine! And congratulations!

i love this home! it's refined, personal, and is obviously LIVED in. it is an ABODE rather than a tightly decorated showcase house. brava, catherine!!

It's too "cute" for me, but there's obviously a lot of good design there. I can't imagine hand stenciling that whole wall. But I love how the wall compliments the green in the painting, not matchy matchy but well cordinated.

I like all of the rooms, except the room in the first photo with the barcelona ottoman. That room seemed a bit forced "eclectic" to me. But it seems a lot of designers/decorators are doing that lately; taking more traditional/transitional pieces as the basis for the room, and then throwing in one statement mid-c modern/bauhaus piece, and calling their style "eclectic" or "eclectic modern."
I am impressed with her use of color. And the hallway is beautiful.

That hallway is absolutely stunning. I want to see more of the dining area - from what I can see, her china collection is well-curated and well-displayed.

Wow, what a nice house. Does anyone know where that chaise is from in the 4th picture? Thank you!

How do these pics come across as "lived in"?

Yikes! I was not sure these would get posted so just a couple comments from me, Catherine. First, Thank You Anh Minh for your comments! Very Kind of you.
But nothing is finished in the other areas of the house! The photograph in the hall (and hand painted/pasteled frame around it) was never intended to "match" the wall in any way. I love the photo and thought it looked just fine against the apple green "interno" lime wash (by Porter Paints). The hall color absolutely does not photograph well although this is a good one! I myself have tried and tried. It is a bright, saturated color that changes and glows in the natural light. Right now I am nuts about this interno lime wash product. The matting is not done on the photo so justice not done to it yet.
The fabric on chaise in living room is also apple green ultra suade, much brighter then pic. And the desk "nook" has been further demolished. The fireplace surround is being updated with new moasic tile called "jazz" which has not arrived yet and the mantel and frame around mirror to be painted another color and the stuff on the mantel was temporary. The entire house is being updated to a more modern look! (as I get older I want things to look younger!)
As for the bedroom sitting area, I love a mix of old and new which yes, I copied from designers. I think the ottoman adds a classic but modern touch.
Anyway, thanks so much for the comments and if you have any questions just let me know.

It all appears too busy for me. I could never live with all that stuff on all the horizontal surfaces - or that wall of plates, for that matter.
And am I the only one having a hard time figuring out how each of the rooms functions? Not that I mean to be harsh though...

My oh my, I have some beautiful stuff and I like to look at my stuff. I am not one to hide away my beautiful china I collect. The china plates on the shelves in small dinning area are from my trips to Paris.
I have a small house, one story, long and narrow. It is VERY lived in but for God's sake if a person is coming to interview me and maybe take a couple photos I do clean it up. If I had known the pics of other unfinished rooms were going to be posted I would have cleaned up even more and re-arranged some things.
I do LOVE that chaise. I found it on the Lane Venture website and ordered it myself from a North Carlolina furniture place with a deep discount. LV has numerous colors (and I mean COLOR, not just another wood finish) you can choose for their furniture finishes. I sent them my fabrics instead of using theirs. The Fireplace, chaise and desk are all in the living room which is quite small.

Catherine-
Your house is absolutely lovely. I've been dying to see it since the Domino contest. Congrats on that btw! I love the picture in the hallway against the lime green. It's very unexpected. I think my aunt has a similar one of Mozart in her home. The fireplace is to die for. As always, it's good to see books in a home! America does read!!!
Thanks again for sharing :-)
