Look! My Tiny Landing Strip

10-28-08 tiny landing strip.jpgLet's do this in the first person, okay? My new apartment has one of those great little phone nooks right inside the front door. I love it but wasn't sure if it would be big enough for a proper landing strip. Unfortunately the entry is kind of snug and doesn't really offer any other area where I could fashion one...

So I've decided to pare the landing strip down to its bare necessities. There's a place for keys, room for any stray mail, and a little picture to put a smile on my face. I'm considering painting the area, or adding something else, but another part of me really likes the simplicity. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em.

Heh heh, bare necessities... and there's a bear picture... hehe.

Anyway. I like it! Depending on what you need to use the landing strip for you can have a few small bowls to sort stuff (one for keys, one for change, etc.) and maybe a small tabletop mail-sorter or just a small tray for dropping mail. But if this how it looks most of the time (not a whole lot to drop off), then I say keep it as is! Or maybe add a small vase with a bud for another pretty thing to look at. :)

I don't think it needs anything else as long as it works for you!

BUT If it were mine and I wanted to paint it, I'd keep it a relatively neutral color.

Also a mirror might work? As something useful on your way out and also to open up the space a little.

I would do the fabric starch trick to line it with some beautiful fabric. And a flower.

Those telephone niches in older buildings are perfect for a little landing strip...

You GO Lily for writing this post using the first person.
Love your simple landing strip.

oh GOD let me second erin's comment. I'd love it if you'd always use first person unless you really are talking about multiple people.

The ubiquitous use of "we" on this site is still considered first person (first person plural that is).

I could swear that we live in the same building, I have a phone nook just like this in my apartment. It still has the old hand phone from when the building was built though, broken of course. Mine is just across from my bathroom door. I usually have a candle or fresh flowers on it.

Good grief, thank you for using "I." I wish it wasn't such a big deal that you have to preface it with an explanation. Why doesn't AT just switch? It's not as though people think that the entire group writes every post. Seriously. AT, take a vote from your readers. I think we'd all appreciate the switch to first person singular.

I love it, and I actually have the perfect size lamp to fit in it. It's soo tiny! It's a yellow ball that fits in the palm of your hand, and a white little shade. Let me know if you'd like it, I don't use it!

I think that it's very charming. I too would paint the background, install a couple of beautiful hooks on the inner side of the alcove to hang the keys, and put a basket or some other asthetically pleasing container on the shelf to hold mail. If the mail receptacle is small enough, I'd either put a bud vase with fresh flowers beside it (as mentioned above) or a small clock. If you are unable to paint, then I would put a larger piece of art on the alcove's inner wall.

There's my ten cents worth. Have fun!

That looks exactly like the nook in my old apartment. Weird.

We used our ledge to showcase some of our favourite finds collected from trips/yard sales/etc.

I love this post. And I LOVE the little picture of the bear. I also love that you used "I" and not "we".

Unfortunately, it's nowhere near the from door.

I like it. I think the bright picture of the polar bear wandering in a wide expansive space gives the small nook just the right amount of contrast.

I had one of these in my first apartment after college.

If I remember correctly, I papered the back. Don't know why. I think I used cork. The nook was in the back hall between the bedroom and the bathroom, so I didn't use it as a landing.

Thanks for the memories. Nooks are so cute.

Who's the artist on the little bear painting?

I'd mirror the back of the nook, so that you can also "check your face".

That is the most adorable picture. I've looked at the others and can't choose one that I like the best.

Cute! My landing strip for my keys is the floor in front of my door. I've actually been proud that putting the keys in one spot has always been a habit of mine. I just wish my apartment was bigger where I could actually have something to put my keys on. Despite my strip being the floor it works incredibly well, if I for whatever reason put my keys somewhere else I end up spending loads of time looking for them. I'd love to have a spot like yours.

And I seem to be the only one that doesn't mind the 'we' reference although the 'I' is nice too.

The artist is e.soule and her etsy shop is FANtastic. All of her photographs are lovely.

I think you picked a perfect shot for your cubby/landing strip. I'm too much of a packrat to keep mine so clean and empty.

I officially love you.

I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who finds the use of the first person plural bloody irritating :D

thank you from our heart.

i love it the way it is now :-) i think this way it is so airy and beautiful, adding anything at all would be a pity. you can change the picture if you want a fresh look now and then.

(and i love that you did it in the first person, too ...)

Ditto on malke's comment, both on the simple beauty of the landing strip as-is and use of the first-person singular. Save the Royal "We" for the next Victorian revival.
