The cake plate under the planter, which is 12.5" in diameter, is actually not vintage, but an $8.99 find from Ross, our favorite discount retailer. The pot is from Longs, the drugstore chain.
We do occasionally pull the cake stand out from under the plant to use it for its original purpose - holding cake (only after washing it well, of course) but in between we've found this solution to be a good one, simultaneously freeing up cabinet space and giving the plant a little "lift."
The photo on top is a new one, taken this morning. As you can see, the plant has changed significantly in the past six months, mainly due to some unfortunate neglect.
(Oh, and we're assuming the original question asker got the photo from our flickr stream.)
does that mean i'm not going to be kicked out of the design blog world for loving tjmaxx's kitchen goods?

Oh, MarshMaxx and Ross are every budget-decorista's guilty little secret! The large supply of giant ceramic chickens and resin lighthouses is intended to turn away those who lack the faith that there are tasteful bargains somewhere in the maelstrom.
Some are better than others, though. The Ross on Market St. in SF, the MarshMaxx at Mercado Santa Clara, and whatever's at the plaza on the border of Burlingame (off El Camino Real, has a Home Depot and a Red Robin) have particularly good housewares sections.

This is very funny, Wende. The same philosophy applies to the infamous Christmas Tree Shop chain--here in the NE, at any rate.

If I have to contemplate how much I miss Christmas Tree Shoppes, I shall make pathetic little squeaking noises for at least the next hour.
