Look!: Painted Sidewalk

We were walking down 18th Street when we passed by this painted sidewalk. It's outside of a new restaurant (not yet opened) called Kasa. We know this isn't "high design," but we appreciate the effort. It definitely put a smile on our face, and it offered up a nice contrast to the grayscale and modern exterior that it's in front of.

That's a great little "welcome" mat! Since the design doesn't match the tile layout, I kind of wish it had a painted background for emphasis. Question: is it even legal to do this to a public sidewalk? I could imagine the city having a problem with this, although it seems charming and harmless to me.
