Look!: Panhandle Band Shell Recycle-o-Rama

Christo's Gates be damned!-- SF now has the Panhandle Band Shell.

We recently slinked to sfist's discovery of a temporary band shell that appeared in the Panhandle a few weeks ago, seemingly overnight.

As the story goes, it was built by a team of Burning Man Macgyvers from salvaged materials. To wizard this summertime treat for the City into being they assembled salvaged metal car bonnets, discarded motherboards, plastic water bottles, and old redwood doors into an amazingly whimsical and inviting structure that showcases what's possible when you take a second look at recycled materials.

Evening concerts are both planned (sort of) and impromptu, but we've yet to encounter any serious performances here. Still, each time we stroll past we've noticed the absolute delight the community is taking in the structure. Kids whirl like dervishes on the generous stage, amateur musicians climb aboard and strike up a tune, passers-by stop to explore and take pictures.

We did some exploring ourselves the other day and took some pictures to share here on AT. Have a look-see, then check it out in person.

THere was a Sunday morning concert by the One Day Band from the Haight Ashbury Co-op Nursery School. It was great fun.

However, I did notice some small pieces from the circuit boards had started to fall on the stage. Not a big deal unless you have a crawling baby who likes to stick things in her mouth or a preschooler who likes dancing in bare feet ;-)
