Look!: Reclaimed Wood Wall at Flipp

6-4-08flippwall.jpgWe recently told you about Flipp, a new furniture store over in Russian Hill. After the jump (of that post), we talked a little bit about the back patio, but we really feel like we didn't shine enough light on the awesome wall that the owner, Daniel Kowalski, designed and built himself.

When asked what the inspiration was behind the wall, Daniel told us that he had been inspired by a fallen barn somewhere in the midwest.

Look. I can appreciate the factors of trying to march to a different drummer sometimes, and all that reclaimed wood project, etc. I didn't even think how unkind to a neighbor before reading the first post. It just looks a little wrecked. As intentionally "inspired" by something as it is, it's somewhat difficult to look at, and sitting out there ... can be all artful, but I don't think it can be restful. It's imparting kinetic energy, it's so chaotic a statement for that setting.

I really don't like to feel this way and force everyone into some suburban standard of conventional fencing, so I'll say it's cool in theory. It's just jangling up my nerves. I like all the stuff and chairs and plants he has.

I think its very nicely done and disagree with the comments about it looking like a fallen barn. As someone who has seen a lot of fallen barns they never look that nice.

I like how the sections are done at different angles, it really highlights the texture. This is much more interesting to look at than a typical fence.

maybe it's because i *like* old barns--and if they're falling down, they just have that much more character--but i really, really like this. i have a small pile of lumber ripped out of a closet i'm reconfiguring. it's probably at least 50 years old and the boards are solid as a rock. i refuse to throw them away, and a local craftsman i offered them to doesn't have room for any more material, so maybe i'll do something like this, on a much smaller scale, of course. i had a friend who incorporated old wooden doors into the side of his shed, so maybe i'll see if i can find a few of those, too.

to the haters: you'll change your mind when dwr comes out with it's bio/eco model.
