Look! School Desks as Side Chairs

4-6-09-side-desks.jpg

In general we may have passed over this look as a little too scholastic, but the way these rooms are styled with the bold, bright colors of Eames shell chairs with attached arm desks gets a passing grade from us.

The desks make great built-in drink trays, relieving the visual clutter of an actual side table. We're not sure what the equivalent use would be in the bedroom, but the yellow chair still looks pretty hip. This home happens to be a vacation rental in Bend, Oregon, so if you're in town you can try it out.

I think these are cute. We actually use an old school desk that opens up as a landing strip. This way we have built-in storage and can keep everything organized. Check it out here: http://makemineeclectic.wordpress.com/2009/01/22/finally-framed/

Dog too cute, can't focus on chairs.

Lol, Obviously, the owners of these chairs are not overweight. This is bringing back horrible memories of squeezing my fat ass into those desks in high school and college. Lord help me, because I'm a lefty too. There was 1 lefty desk for every million righty desks.

Sorry, the last thing I want in my house is a chair that reminds me of school.

I love the shell chairs... but with the desk arm? I don't know... It's like they wanted a shell chair, but the only ones they could get had those tables attached. In my home it would probably just collect unwanted clutter... and if it didn't have anything on it, then why have the table top at all?

I think this would be PERFECT for eating in front of the tv. They come with a built in t.v. dinner table!

no thanks. seems very impractical for a side chair. yes a few times it makes sense, working on some papers, eating. but the rest of the time, no. If you have people over, they don't want to sit in desks. Plus, although a HM shell chair is comfy, the desk ones rarely were and seemed to force correct posture on you. Not my idea of comfy or visually appealing.

Plus also, always being tall, and am 6'2" now, these desks don't fit, my legs always hit the top. Super uncomfy

I'm in the same boat with jmorey on height. if I were still 13 these would be great for watching tv and working on my laptop. But Being 6' my knees would be hitting hte table and my lappy would be way to close.
Now I want to make a more practical chair like this :)

Lacks versatility as extra seating for the reasons mentioned above. The attached desk also makes them more cumbersome to move around than normal chairs (can't stack 'em either). Plus, they bring back blah memories of high school.

The chairs somehow fit with the room and look cute, but I can't remember something as uncomfortable... :/

The school chairs are a great idea, but the real reason I'm emerging from lurker-ville is to say how excited I am to see these vacation rentals in Bend. My family has been going to Bend for vacationing in the winter and summer since I was a little kid, and it is so cool to watch it grow into a hip place to get away from the city and get outdoors.

Think about these chairs as an accessory to hotel living, not to apartment living--It's a good place to dump shopping bags, luggage, somewhere to sit while putting on shoes/socks other than the bed. When you're on vacation, how often do you eat in your hotel room in front of the TV? As a kid, when I travelled with my family, we did this often to save money.

I think it is important to point out that the table flip up on these Aemes chairs so that you can move the table out of the way if you want. Plus slowdown^ i do believe that they do stack.

Those chairs are ugly enough without a writing desk attached. I will never understand the love of the shell chair. But I will take the dog.

I love the chairs but who makes them like that? or do you customize it yourself?
