AT:SF reader Sophie wrote to us: Thank you AT! I was inspired by the contact paper post, and fixed the eyesore that was my desk. The rest of my room has dark brown furniture, and my blonde desk stuck out like a sore thumb. I attached before and after pics to share!

Yay for The Decemberists!!!!!!
And nice desk too. :)

You did a great job! I need to do that to my dark-veneered desk--it should be blonde maple to match the rest of my condo! ;D

The dark brown looks great!
But here's the important question-- HOW did you do that flower detail in white? Is that a decal?
Nice job. :)

Kgardner, I just ordered some cherry wood grain contact paper from Aubuchon Hardware. It looks nice on the website! I'm going to be trying this on an old bureau.

It isn't a decal. I drew it with a metallic silver sharpie :)

Based on previous AT posts, I actually just went to amazon.com and did a search for "walnut contact paper". I ended up buying it from the "BIC Superstore" but I think there was a few options of sellers to choose from.

Everyone interested in contact paper should check out:
www.designyourwall.com
I haven't ordered any from there bc I just recently discovered it, but it's got a TON of stuff and lots of different types of "wood."

Very cool! Never thought of it before. Did you use one big sheet and just cut it to size or did you have to deal with seams?

did you add a shelf?
the top picture doesn't have the top shelf in it?

That's brilliant! I am totally doing that to our cheap computer desk after we move (and I know what room it's in). Thanks for the idea!

i just covered my desk with light and dark wood contact paper in a herringbone pattern.. i am wondering how well does the contact paper holds up. should i look at putting some type of protective covering? and if so, what should i use.
