It's projects like this that make us wish for even a few stairs in our apartment to decorate, and it seems a particularly quick and easy one, too. More pictures and another stair project after the jump...

This is just one of the projects that skilled stencil artist Melanie Royals did for Maryam of My Marrakesh fame. Another set of stairs will receive the stenciled risers seen below:
We can't wait to see the finished project.

These are really neat. I think it helps that all the patterns are in the same gray tone, so even something too busy tends to look a lot calmer and brings it together. Seeing all the panels and how it's done also helps. This would be something you want to work out maybe in photoshop first and then be able to manipulate which arrangement of panels works toward the whole. It's one of those things that looks like it might be easy to just slap up, but if you don't take time to figure out the order, it could look a lot less cohesive and therefore hideous. Or you could just pick one pattern you like or alternate two.

Very pretty! I can't imagine actually doing that though. I don't have it in me. I do appreciate the beauty of it.

Gorgeous! I've been thinking about stenciling my stair risers, though I think my limited artistic skills would be put to better use with simpler designs.

What a great solution, and so pretty, without looking twee at all (like so many stencils do)! Beautiful!

Thank you so, so much for posting these projects that we did in Marrakech! Stair risers are ideal canvases for design work like this because each riser can be a piece of art in itself and it's so much fun to do a series of patterns that are each unique but related by design theme and color palette.
For the first series of henna-inspired patterns the designs were stenciled in place on the painted plaster risers. The second series was MUCH easier to paint as the wood was cut to fit and then be glued on after painting. The Zelij tile pattern stencils are now available on our website!! I think that they could be a lot of fun for furniture painting projects as well.
