Look! Succulents in Glasses

We have some new favorite glasses from the Crate and Barrel Outlet Store. We picked them up back in November when we were looking for something to hold our paperwhite bulbs and loved the idea of showing off the roots and rocks in simple clear glass containers. At $1.95 each, the price can't be beat and we keep coming up with new excuses to pull them off the shelf....

We love the texture of the layered dirt and rocks and the small size glasses are perfect for simple table arrangements.

Those are very cute and are almost identical to some arrangements I helped create for the W in San Diego last winter. But.
I hate to be a party pooper, but those fellas are going to rot if you leave them in glass. They need to be able to drain fully in between waterings. Very nice for a temporary arrangement, though.

Isn't that what the rocks on the bottom are for?

I've had great luck doing something similar with fun and cheap glassware bought at Goodwill.

The rocks will certainly buy you time, but there is always going to be some water trapped in the bottom unless there is a hole where air can circulate and excess water can escape.
