Look!: View from the Infinity

4-4-08 infinity view.jpgThe first of two luxury condominium buildings in SOMA opened its doors to residents recently, and we had a chance to check out what the view is like up there.

The Infinity consists of two large, circular buildings, which give the residents a breath-taking panoramic view of the city.

4-4-08 infinity bay.jpgOn the other side, the Bay Bridge was pleasantly humming away while a ship passed underneath. You can see the construction of the second building, but luckily the killer views are, for the most part, intact. While we can't deny how beautiful the city looks from up there, we think we'd miss having a little outdoor space. How about you? Would you prefer a cozy garden or a spectacular view?

spectacular view any day.

Plus, low density housing (the type that allows for "cozy gardens") is extraordinarily bad for the environment.

Depends on my mood. When my cozy garden is in all it's lush glory, I'm loving it. When it's dormant, I long for city views. The thing about this location in SF SOMA is that the fog comes in and cleans out the pollution -- so SF is particularly kind to high-rise living. But working an atrium into a space like this, I think, would make be uber happy.

The view, definitely the view. A view doesn't need maintenance--it's basically constantly "in bloom"; evergreen, if you wish. And if you have floor-to-ceiling windows (like these towers seem to have), then your apartment pretty much comes with built-in artwork. My ultimate dream is an upper-level apartment (20th floor or so) in a gorgeous urban setting (London, Chicago, or Seattle maybe?) with floor-to-ceiling windows all around...Imagine sitting facing the windows late at night, all the lights off, just staring into the twinkling city lights...Aaaaaaahhhhh I need to make money NOW.

The view of those ugly buildings is far worse than any good that comes of the view from them. They look so out of place but it does make me smile thinking of the suckers who are spending so much money to be by the traffic, in the flimsy construction and not even have the patch of green space I have with my flat in Potrero Hill.

VIEW. Gardens don't make me daydream like a good view does.
