Yet another fab nursery for Nursery Show-and-Tell, this one from blogger shiso mama, aka Mimi.
Mimi writes: We really hated the idea of filling our (new) house with a lot of junky kids' stuff, so we took things slow and have been filling things in here and there. We did an informal inventory, and all the furniture that we've purchased over the past few years has either been from craigslist or from the DWR warehouse/sample sales. I hate paying retail, but want good, solid furniture that will last. We try to buy minimally, and purchase stuff that will have a long lifespan, or will have another use later in life. [more after the jump]
The find we're most proud of is Otis's crib - it's a sustainably harvested maple Arts and Crafts crib that we bought off craigslist for something like 30% of retail. But the FLOR tiles, the Barcelona chair, the toy box, the shelves, they're all from the warehouse/sample sales.
Our main concession to kid-ness are the Japanese balloon animals that I hung in the corner like a mobile. I like the way they float and sway. Other than that and a Enzo Mari poster, things are pretty minimal and tidy.
We actually just went to another one of the DWR sample sales over the weekend and bought a few more pieces. It's starting to feel like our house is filling up with stuff, so we're about done.
Thanks Mimi!
Mimi,
Otis' room is very nice and calm. I remember seeing that crib (perhaps not that very one) on craigslist and losing out, a rare find.
Was wondering about the rocking animal...
Mimi: Otis has a great room. What is the story on the adult-size rocking chair?
I like the lamp.
Cute! Is that the kind of carpet that comes in tiles?
Thanks for the comments!
The rocker is from Playsam (they make those streamlined little race cars) and they make a variety of animals.
The adult rocking chair is the folding Rex rocker that we found at the DWR sample sale (but I actually saw a floor sample listed on craigslist recently for a pretty good price) and I find it fairly comfortable.
The carpet tiles are from FLOR, and we used the Housepet, which although durable, is unfortunately a bit rough and scratchy, which has not been good recently with all the sitting patiently on the floor and trying to crawl out quietly when my son finally falls asleep. I'm not a huge fan of carpet, but I love those FLOR tiles. We have them all over the house.
Hi, I also love the lamp!
Could you let me know where you purchased it?
I love the nursery--very cool. And Otis is such a cutie-patootie!
I love this and it makes me angry at anyone who is a slave to pastels for their nursery!
I always like/liked the idea of having a non-kidsy room for kids, with nice muted colors and a lot of taste. But then I read that children in the developmental stages need lots of bright colors to help stimulate their brains and still forming neurons et al. Then again, you can always make sure the kid's stimulated outside the bedroom.
