Over the past few months we've shared a few of our home projects. Today, we're showing off our bedroom. Like most of our renovations, this is mid-process. Window trim hasn't been added, we still haven't decided on a floor and there are still paint touch-ups galore. Jump below for more before and after pictures...
Here's what we did:
• Ripped off wood paneling
• Put in new insulation (green move!!!)
• Reframed some areas and sheetrocked
• Ripped out low ceiling and painted the beams for a really cool lofted ceiling
• Installed stained glass window
• Painted everything from floor to ceiling

NICE! A pickled white-washed cork floor would be nice in that space.

Gorgeous!
I LOVE that stained glass window.

Nice green move in the walls, but I bet you lost a lot more R value in the ceiling. Looks great in any case.

Love what you have done -- actually, the painted floor is awesome -- why change it? (love your dresser too)

The ceiling treatment may lose R value, but it looks just wonderful :)

Agreed on the ceiling - It looks really cool, but you are going to be having heat and moisture issues in there, I would think.

Are you people crazy? Other than the windows it looks horrible.

The ceiling is lovely even if you loose some insulating ability. There might be a way to boost the insulation in the 'shell' of the roof, although that might only be practical if you do it while re-roofing the house. Which might be something to consider down the line with an older house anyways.
The only thing I don't like is the rug under the bed. The bed frame and the rug just don't work together. It's too matchy. But maybe one or the other is something you're planning on replacing, since the room is still a work in progress.

thanks to the folks with the nice comments and/or constructive feedback. and yes, insulation is a concern that we'll address at the point when we're ready to deal with more of the structural issues. we spent last summer and winter here, it was fine. we've also installed an attic fan to help deal with some of the moisture and heat issues.
lurker2209- yes, thankfully the rug is temporary until we can figure out the flooring. still on the fence with our options...cork is still up there on the list. pickled white-washed sounds like a good option!

Looks great -- especially ceiling and stained glass window. Where did you get your bed?

Not my style at all. The bed looks like IKEA's Malm.

amazing what you did with the ceiling

I LOVE your stained glass window and wall color!
My concern is that you placed your bad under the window though... not really smart considering our seismic zone (again, coming from a seismologist's wifey he-he)... also not very Zen ;)

beautiful stained glass window!
as for the floor- what about ripping out the tiles and putting a nice glaze to the concrete? i don't really recall what this process is called.

LOVE the ceiling! That's exactly what I want to do to our bedroom!
We painted over existing paneling, but will remove it in a few years as $$ permits to put in new insulation and install sheetrock.
The room is great!

i've never seen any ceiling renovated this well. Are there no overhead lights or wiring? Very nice.

thank you thank you and thank you to everyone!
look for a post on the stained glass window soon!
yes, the bed is malm and we're quite happy with it.
no overhead lights for now, the windows let in enough daylight and at night all we really need are reading lights by the bed. table lamps seem to be much more flattering...
LOVE the concrete idea...must research....

I like it (and I like our Malm too - just put casters on it today in fact).
We had an exposed ceiling in our bedroom too (cathedral ceilings under a "hot roof") so we wound up putting insulation up with sheetrock over. You could do that down the road if need be, and still retain the nice rafters effect you have going.

Poster, I'm glad you mentioned what you did with your cathedral ceilings. I had a cath ceiling in my last home's great room, and it was difficult to heat & cool, but I always attributed that to the 13-ft ceilings, not inadequate insulation.
When we redo our bedroom, we may shoot in some insulation between the boards and the roof. I'm so determined to have the plank look, I might even have the contractor put up insulation, then mount new boards over it.
Our room is an addition to the house and doesn't have an attic, so I don't think an attic fan would do us any good. We do have a fabulous ceiling fan, though.

Poster- oh, we've seen that done before, it looks really great. definitely bookmarked for "down the road". hey, wanna send us some photos of your ceiling?
view shayna r's profile
What color/brand paint did you use? That is exactly what I've been trying to find for our new apt.

@ madampince, another option that could work, depending on your climate perhaps, is more insulation on the roof and leave the planks exposed. When we had to re-roof a year or so ago, the roof wound up with the planks, tar paper, foam boards, OSB on top of the foam, more tar paper and then ordinary asphalt shingles. The R value gain was noticeable (we lost the raindrop sound, which we sort of enjoyed).
@ shayna r - it's really nothing exciting - there's just a central beam at the peak (11') with smooth sheetrock angling down to the walls like most any other ceiling. It would have been nice to leave the planks exposed but at the time it was easier to insulate the bedroom and wait a few years to think about a new roof. The garage is the only room in this 1976 era "kit" house that still has exposed planks in the ceiling.

The whole room has lightened up, love the ceiling and the wall color. It has transformed beautifully. Forget those nay sayers. I'm as picky as they come and I love it!

Nice job! It's so much lighter and brighter. I like the ceiling. I don't believe in living your life for some buyer down the line. Do what you like, and if necessary, change it when it's time to put the place on the market.

Nice work. Great dresser, window and floors.
We are searching for paint colors for our living room, can you tell me the green color you used?
Thanks, Eileen
